Symonds will NOT be selected

Cricket Australia (CA) has advised its National Selection Panel (NSP) that Andrew Symonds cannot be considered for national selection until he has completed further counselling and rehabilitation.

CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland today announced that Symonds will be unavailable for consideration for selection for the South Africa Test tour this month and will need to satisfy formal rehabilitation criteria before again being made available for international selection.

Mr Sutherland said CA had re-assessed Symonds’ progress with his rehabilitation after the player was fined $4000 for a Code of Behaviour breach relating to detrimental public comment late last month.

“Our assessment is that he is making good progress but that his commitment needs testing against new, tougher criteria we will finalise after consultation with his counselors, the ACA and Queensland Cricket,” he said.

“We have a responsibility to Andrew and his welfare but we also have a responsibility to Australian cricket to ensure his commitment is as it needs to be before he can be considered for national selection”.

In making the decision, Mr Sutherland noted feedback from the state, national players and Australian team management supporting that Symonds was making good progress with the rehabilitation program he is undertaking.

Mr Sutherland said he had advised Andrew Symonds of the decision.

Rehabilitation criteria are likely to include that:
• Symonds review and re-affirm his personal documented commitments
• The counselling program is increased in concentration and treated as a priority above Symonds CA and QC commitments
• Formal fortnightly rehabilitation progress reports are made to CA

He said CA would review Symonds’ progress at the end of the Sheffield Shield season, which is prior to the NSP selection of its squad for the Australia-Pakistan ODI series to be played from April.

If they try to stop him playing in the IPL in April, look out for the retirement from international cricket.

Maybe if the ACB had showed him a bit of support when he was racially abused last year it might never have got to this stage.

Hold on a minute, I think the comment deserves consideration, even if you don't agree with it.

Irrespective of anything Symonds did previously, the media, his cricket board, and his country turned their backs on him when he was entitled to a bit of support. I know it would have annoyed the hell out of me, it may have been just enough to tip Symonds over the edge.

I reckon killer wasps and AH have a pretty good point. Symonds really has lost the plot since then. He was pretty much hung out to dry last summer when he really should have received more support from CA.

I think symonds has to take responsibility for his own actions this time round.. He was already skating on thin ice and really if he was keen to get his place back in the australian side he wouldn't have been out drinking again... Plus he really hasn't got alot of runs lately so he was doing nothing to say pick me!!!!!!!!!!!!

CA are an absolute joke.

Some fantastic points raised in this thread.

He was racially abused and CA turned their back on him because it might effect their income. The game is ruled by the BCCI or whatever they call themselves these days.

He also has a few drinks and is slammed for that. The majority of players would enjoy a bevvy I'd say yet it is Roy to cops it all.

Yep, it's funny when the guys who(I assume) have a say in these decisions where having drinking contests on planes.

Whatever happened to keeping private lives private? Sutherland said CA have an obligation to Symond's welfare, what a load of crap. That obligation ends when his job ends, he's allowed to do what he wants any other time. If he doesn't perform then drop him.

They should have an obligation to keep their noses out of other people's business.

He'd probably perform better if they'd just let him knock back a couple while he's waiting to bat, knock a bit of nervous energy off.
