January 2009 weather summary

Prior to the 26th of January, Adelaide was headed for a slightly above average temperature for the month. Five days above 41 have bumped that up somewhat, but not near record levels.

The minimum average was 17.93; 1.28 above the average according to my data, and it ranks at no.27 for the hottest minimum for January.
The maximum average assuming todays temperature stands at 41.1 is 32 degrees; 3.36 above average, and ranks no.7 for the hottest maximum for January. In order, 1908, 2001, 1939, 1906, 1890 and 1981 were above this, 1908 holding the record for any month with 34.18.
The mean average was 24.96; 2.32 above the average. This ranks at no.14; 1908 leading the way again, with 27.19.

Spelly, do you have any more details on 2001. Know on the West Coast we had something like from Dec 29 to 14 or 15 Jan all 38+ (hottest was 48), and wasn't until 25th that the max temp got under 35. I don't mind the hot weather, but this got a bit much (though probably not a patch on some of those mining towns).

As far as 2000/01 Summer season goes, it still is the hottest on record for the minimum and mean temperatures. The maximum belongs to the 1905/06 season. Ironically, the following summer (2001/02) is the coolest on record for maximum and mean temperatures. The minimum temperature belongs to the 1939/40 season.

I forgot the rainfall. 1mm fell in Adelaide, this is equal 14th driest January for Adelaide.
