I have an air-conditioned office in town - where it is very cold, an "air-conditioned" office in the 'burbs - where it is quite warm, the air con is only switched on when I get there so has no chance and I can work at home (which I am doing right now) and we have great air-con, double brick walls and no sun on the side/front of the house after about 10am so it never heats up too much at all.

I spend some time outdoors as well, but have free reign to cancel a lot of what we do as it involves working with kids running around outside. Everything for this week has long been cancelled, I just have to pop out to see a few people here and there.

Driving past ETSA crews, road working crews, builders and other outdoor workers I really do feel for them and hope their employers apply a common sense approach - some people are too stupid to decide for themselves and just keep working even under extreme conditions.

My brother is a builder and hasn't worked past 10am yet this week.

Is that Bob? Sorry.

Well the A/C is not actually working in my office today, so its not exactly fantastic conditions. My PC is slowing down due to the heat. But F*** it, im as hard as nails and I'll work till the mouse melts ;)

I was going to ask what heater was doing under her desk? I'm sure he'll (heater) post at some stage to explain.

Back in my undergrad days I had reason to interact with the (Flinders) Uni's aboriginal welfare officer. This person was a transplanted Territorian; from Alice, IIRC. She would consistently have the heater running in her office regardless of the ambient temperature.

To those that voted that there should be exempted from working outside ...

Would you be happy for the ETSA crews to stay inside if your area was blacked out?

It's horses for courses it depends completely on what the job is at the time. It's up to employers and site managers to follow all OHS guidelines and for the self-employed people to use common sense. There'll be a small minority of employers that do the wrong thing, but most are fully across OHS these days.

Some things can't wait, even if it's 45 degrees.

I voted yes.

Iam a furniture removallist these days and had to work 11 hours yesterday. From 630am till 530pm. That is hard yakka in anyones books. The job yesterday was out at Mawson Lakes in a new street where there was no trees or shade. It also included stairs. It was 47 at Parafield Airport yesterday which is just round the corner.

Also, my missus returned from Qld last night at 8pm so i had to go to the airport then back to hers. I didnt get to sleep till 11pm. I think my body was paralyzed.

Had to start work at 6am today, had 2 jobs to do, both including stairs. Luckily we had em done by 2. But alas, as soon as I got home I got a phonecall saying "ill pick you up at 5, got another job to do."

So now im off for a well deserved Nanna Nap :D

Another reason to close factories down when high temps forecast is to stop factories using up all the power causing massive o/loads. Safety over Profits, not profits over safety!!!

Factories don't just exist to make profits for shareholders

They actually make stuff! Stuff we use!!! Stuff like bread, milk

You think the factory workers would appreciate more forced annual leave?

I for one would. Worked at Mitsi's for 12 years so used to forced leave!

I was actually thinking more of manufactoring factories that have large presses. I would think working in a milk company on days like today would be fantastic.(coolroom)
