Sanath Jayasuriya has become the oldest player to score an international century, his efforts helping Sri Lanka set India a target of 247 in the first one-day international in Dambulla.

Jayasuriya's 107 lacked his customary whirlwind pace, but it helped the hosts recover from the shock of losing the in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan without a run on board.

Dilshan was the victim of an unfortunate mix-up and was run out after facing just three deliveries from new-ball bowler Zaheer Khan.

Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara (44) rebuilt the innings with a 118-run stand for the second wicket, while a quickfire 35 from Farveez Maharoof helped Sri Lanka finish with 246 for seven from their allotted 50 overs.

Ishant Sharma finished with a haul of 3-51 from 10 overs.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to field at first seemed justified when Zaheer began with two maidens and Dilshan was sent back early.

Dilshan had shaped to defend a delivery from Zaheer, but an inside edge on to his pads had looped to square-leg.

Dilshan set off for a single, but was sent back by Jayasuriya when more than half-way down the pitch. Yousuf Pathan had by then swooped on the ball and rattled the stumps.

Apart from Zaheer, however, India's bowlers struggled with line and length, helping Jayasuriya and Sangakkara get back on track.

The two were rarely troubled and accumulated runs at a slow, but steady pace.

Sangakkara fell six runs short of a half-century, stepping out to hit left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha over the top but failing to clear Suresh Raina at mid-on.

Jayasuriya went on to reach his 28th ODI century, becoming the oldest player at 39 years and 212 days to achieve the mark.

He also went past the 13,000-run mark in one-day internationals, becoming only the second player to reach that milestone.

The left-hander added 51 runs for the third wicket with Thilina Kandamby (17) but fell one over after enforcing the batting powerplay.

India's Virender Sehwag was ruled out at the start with an injury, his place being taken by Rohit Sharma.

This record is just for ODI's not all international cricket. He surpassed Geoff Boycott who scored a century in an ODI v Aus in 1979 aged 38 years 51 days. Jayasuria was 39 years 212 days.

The oldest bloke to score a century in Test cricket was Jack Hobbs who was 46 years and 82 days old when he scored 142 for England against Australia in 1929. There are a host of players who have scored centuries after their 40th birthday with the most recent being Graham Gooch in 1994.
