According to Music Max's countdown today (okay it's Music Max and you are asking for trouble) the top 10 Iconic Australian songs of all time are......

10 - Jimmy Barnes "Working Class Man"
9 - Goanna "Solid Rock"
8 - Icehouse "Great Southern Land"
7 - Gangagang "Sounds of then"
6 - John Farnham "You're the voice"
5 - Midnight Oil "Beds are burning"
4 - Crowded House "Better be home soon"
3 - Men at Work "Down Under"
2 - AC/DC "Highway to Hell" (they managed to use a live version with Brian Johnson singing!)
1 - Cold Chisel "Khe Sahn"

It reads like an Austereo radio programme director's wet dream.

Couple of points...

#10 is written by an American
#6 is written by some English musos living in America
#4 is written and sung by a Kiwi - or are claiming them as our these days? Some we do some we don't.
#3 is co-written by a Scotsman currently living in California.
#2 is being sung by a Geordie
And the most iconic aussie song is about a battleground that no Australian soldier stepped foot in during the Vietnam war.

Aussie as hey? :-k

To me 'Khe Sahn' is one of the most overrated (and over played) songs ever.

It's okay (good lyrics, reasonable music), but it's not as special as it's made out to be.

Im happy no one has said Down Under by Men At Work. The topic is greatest Australian song, not greatest anti-Australia song.

In saying that, I love the version by Pennywise http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=U4MiEjSL4hs

In light of all the binge drinking that supposedly goes on these days "Sorry 'bout the violence" might be an appropriate choice as well. ;)

Considering by your signature and avatar you obviously like TISM I thought you might nominate
"I might be a **** but I'm not a ****ing ****".

Good call!!

Under the Milky Way by the Church for me!!! ;)

You can add 'Metropolis', 'Is this where you live?', & 'The Unguarded Moment' to the 'Best of The Church' list.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

This is Australia - Gangajang

I know Wegs said it before, but J Ok was brilliant. I've got several of his albums.

Not forgetting "Almost With You".

Incidentally was there ever a best-of Church album?

A couple of "best of's" have been released...

Hindsight 1980 - 1987

Deep in the Shadows is their most recent CD. A 2 CD set worth buying to get a good taste of them. This one's a great buy!! ;)
