Radio rant smells like strife for outspoken Andrew Symonds
By Christian Nicolussi
January 24, 2009 ANDREW Symonds will be quizzed by Cricket Australia over a bizarre radio rant in which he labelled big-hitting New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum a "lump of s--t".

Symonds's six minutes of madness happened live on air with Roy and HG on Triple M on Friday night.

The hosts were heard giggling as Symonds babbled on about McCullum and, at one stage, Matthew Hayden's wife.

Symonds only a day earlier took a swipe at New South Wales for signing McCullum at the expense of a local player for Saturday night's Twenty20 final against Victoria.

It came as Australia lost the third one-day international to South Africa at the SCG, falling behind 2-1 in the five-match series.

Symonds told the hosts: "They're trying to use him (McCullum) as the out because he's a Kiwi.

"Yep, we love to hate them, but he's the lump of shit, sorry, lump of cow dirt, that people are thinking of. Now to get away from that, the actual topic is about playing cricket and getting into a final.

"To get yourself to that position and if you haven't brought anybody in, personally I wouldn't be changing a winning team.

"It doesn't matter about McCullum, mate, he could have been Irish, he still would have got it. It's not his fault, he's doing his job and trying to earn a wage.

"But what happened here is an injustice. I said Daniel Smith, his opposite number, was going to miss out. But they said this morning that Daniel Smith is going to play, but at the end of day somebody is still going to miss out."

Asked later about Hayden's cooking, Symonds replied that he takes a "side glance at Hayden's wife" as "it helps the meal go down amply well".

CA spokesman Peter Young said he had forwarded the recording to acting chief executive Michael Brown who will listen to the segment first thing on Saturday morning.

Doesn't seem to be a lot in it from what I am reading. If anything came from this, the game has taken itself too seriously.

I was assuming there was a relationship between this issue and his poor form...

Still at some point you have to think the guy stops being worth the trouble. I've defended him to the hilt but I think it's now time to close the chapter on Symonds career. Gone fishing was bad enough, he is trying to repair his relationship with Michael Clarke and you would think now Hayden wouldn't have anything more to do with him after those public comments about his wife and even his cooking.

At the end of the day the guy is a yobbo pisshead who let it all go to his head. Now he's a shell of the cricketer he once was and would be too much of a liability in South Africa let alone the chance to act up again in England either.

Well perhaps he is showing what I believe will come, those playing test cricket do the wrong thing to lose their contracts and just go to the 20/20 comp to make millions, I hope this isn't Roys thinking but I have my suspicions

Hayden said he took no offence to Symonds's reference to his wife.

"The next time Roy comes around he will be on wash-up duty for dinner and he'll be on anchor duty the next time we go on the boat," he quipped.

Or in Blue Murder type fashion he might end up being the anchor. ;)

I would've suspected that too but thought the Pakistan tour was going to be cancelled allowing him to play all of the IPL games this year and then collect his full $1.5m. However, I just read an article that says the Pakistan "tour" will be going ahead at a neutral venue so yeah I'm with you, he's trying to get himself sacked. He won't be able to pull the "I refuse to tour Pakistan" thing also due to playing at a neutral venue and just the other week was talking about retirement being close.

Can't really blame him though given that he is supposedly "only" on $500,000 a year with CA yet can earn a maximum of $US1.45m in the IPL this year and again next year. You can't let anything get in the way of potentially making that kind of money.
