Getting to Compass Cup (cow race) Sat 24th

Postby Sploosh » Fri Jan 23, 2009 9:39 pm

I was intending to go to the Compass Cup tomorrow. BUT, the Tour Down Under seems to be smack in the middle, with road blocks everywhere, I'm sure. Any suggestions of how to get to Mount Compass from Adelaide, but avoiding Willunga/McLaren Flat etc?

Also, any information about when it starts etc? I tried to d/l the .pdf at

http://www.compasscup.com.au/

but can't seem to get it to open....

Go down the main South Rd through the Sellicks Hill deviation (have to be real old to remember the original main South rd) Just before you get to Pongy to Left to go to Victor on to the Pages Flat rd. Stay on that rd for about 20 mins until you come to The Victor Rd. turn right on to teh main Victor Rd and then 5 mins later you are in Compass.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Sploosh...just tried that web link and i think i'm downloading the Program but it's painfully slow.

Might take a while but if it works for me what info would you like and I'll put it on here for you.

JAS

AL1...it's worked...unfortunately I don't think I can copy and paste so ask away.

For starters the 'gates open at 11am' and the Compass Cup is at 6pm

We've got bowlers that have to get to Victor tomorrow as well.
About the time the race starts.

I think you are better off just going straight down Victor Harbor Road to Mt Compass.

If you happen to 'run into' the actual race you won't have to wait too long.
They don't actually block the roads off, they have what they call
Rolling stoppages, where they just stop the traffice temporarily to let the bikes through.
The maximum time you will have to wait to get through would be about 20 minutes.

It would be no differnet going down South Road, as the race is along there too.

So I think you'll just have to be patient...lol.

http://www.tourdownunder.com.au/2009/?q=Stage+5+Map

In saying all of the above, definitely avoid the townships of McLaren Vale and Willunga O:)

EDIT **
Having a close look at the map, I don't think the bikes go down Victor Harbor Road at all.
There will just be traffic and spectators at the top of the hill watching them go up
Old Willunga Hill.

O:)
You get what you give....

At the tour down under site, however, they say the following, and I read "Total Road Closures" as meaning for the whole time. Perhaps they are rolling closures, but the following seems contradictory!

From 0700 hours to 1500 hours

AT WILLUNGA

Main Road from Station Road to Aldinga Road
From 0700 hours to 1900 hours

Kell Street from Main Road to St. Peters Terrace
From 0700 hours to 1900 hours

High Street from Aldinga Road to St. Judes Street

Ah, ok, so you think the main road is not affected at all then? If so, a big PHEW for that!

Those road closures are in the actual towns.

I think the only way that you'll be affected by driving along Victor Harbor road is extra traffic.

So leave a bit earlier than you planned.

Remembering from previous years and reading the site
I don't think you'll run into any bikes.

Great news! The bikes go from Aldinga into the town of Willunga, which crosses the main road to Victor, so I guess there must be an underpass somewhere that the bikes travel along......

Yes, that's right, over Tatachilla Road near McLaren Vale.

So watch out for those spectators trying to hang off that bridge to get a view !!

As I said, traffic on South Road is going to be more affected than Victor Road. O:)

Maybe Compass Cup is at 6pm because they think they can capture some of the spectators from the tour down under.

"Mistreatment of cows will not be tolerated"

Yes, I'm sure riding them is perfectly natural

Just came back home via Main South Road, Old Noarlunga...
And traffic is atrocious, banked back to the express way
And then going up Victor Harbor Road.

So much for me saying it shouldn't be that bad going up Victor Harbor Road.

But I think it's because everyone is heading to the TDO.

Should settle by this afternoon.
