March 2.

Wow, each to their own but IMHO the new track's up there with the worst they've ever done...and that's saying something! A complete mess of a song.

Same here Zippy ! I love some of U2's stuff, but the single is crap.

Hopefully they pull something out of the mire and release a decent album.....

Elvis Costello should sue for the bits of 'Pump it Up' they nicked too!
Sounds lame in the same way that Discotheque was lame - tried for something interesting but it's all a bit too forced. Still, at least it's not as 'safe' as the stuff on their last few albums, I like the fact they're still experimenting even if it doesn't always quite work out.

Their new song was crap. Dis-a-ponting. Hope their other songs are better than that.

Harsh call. Actually, poor call.

'How to dismantle an atomic bomb' was a great album. Didn't it even win a few Grammies (8)?

Then there's 'All you can't leave behind' - 7 Grammies.

C'mon Southee, I expect better from you...

Go away Clarrie and put on your Guy Sebastian!!!

You comparing "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" to "The Unforgettable Fire" or "Joshua Tree".....no match mate!!!

Your music inexperience shows!!!

The last 2 albums have been mundane and boring. :?

Quit living in the past man. It's called remaining relevant.

I'm not comparing those albums - you are! The albums you mention are great.

I'm with Southee on this one. The last two albums have been solid enough but safe as houses (the kind that Americans give awards to) and pretty forgettable I'd say. They've said it themselves, the new one is supposed to be a self-administered kick in the pants to get them re-energised again, like they did with Achtung Baby after the dire Rattle & Hum. Which is why I had big hopes for the first single...

Nope, though I do rate his musical taste :)

For me U2 are one of those strange bands that I love and hate in equal measure. I've followed them since I was a kid around the War album and I appreciate exactly why critics and lots of people don't rate them. They (esp Nobo) are extremely capable of being exactly the sort of pompous, self-righteous, vacuous, empty, embarrassing stadium bands that I despise.

But every so often they are equally capable of making something truly magical and spine-tingling (songs like Bad, Exit, Love is Blindness) and to their credit are often prepared to look inwards and reinvent themselves occasionally so as not to become stale. Occasionally it works, like with the whole ZooTV thing, often it is a disaster, like Popmart and the urban cowboy shtick of Rattle & Hum. I like the potential of U2, I don't always enjoy the reality.

I agree with CC. Both of those albums are brilliant. I do admit i havent listened to the earlier albums much, but i think the more recent Songs have been better.

Just saw the video on Rage - quite good but doesn't improve the song. Can't believe it's produced by Eno/Lanois - sounds like it's been flattened through pro-tools.
