Is this years Tour Down Under SA's biggest ever sport event?

Postby Cambridge Clarrie » Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:01 pm

Mike Raaaaaaan says yes. I say no.

Each of the F1 GP's were bigger international events in my opinion.

Enormous positive for the event getting Lance here and I know cycling is huge in Europe particularly, but I reckon the media are really going over the top in this instance... (Adelaide Now particularly)...

This would have to be one of the biggest Fun Events with Armstrong here.

Creating interest.

A good move SA.

This could end up anywhere.

It has Dog_gers interest.

I will go and see this super Lance.

Australia hasn't grown up with cycling as an international sport.

BUT WE ARE LEARNING.

They can stage it in the Northern suburbs somewhere, that way i won't have to put up with/endure it for the whole of next week.

Have no interest whatsoever.

I think it could be considered the BIGGEST as it reaches so many different areas so everyone gets to see it (within reason of course)
Whereas the GP, Clipsal, etc is limited to who can get there, afford it etc
Im not a Crows fan but their first home game was pretty big for the state too IMO

I couldn't give a stuff about Lance Armstrong and think it was poor form for the Rann government to give him $US1m in appearance money.

You can argue either way but it is generating a truckload of interest from around the world in south australia and the tour down under. I know that they have estimated that there will be 60,000 people in stirling for wednesday's stage.

It's certainly a major event, but if people can't see that Media Mike is just building this up to get votes you are well and truely blind. Is it not amazing soon as something goes wrong in this state that peanut sends out his ministers to answer scrutiny questions, soon as something positive occurs he is on the front of the line answering questions left, right and centre. Where was Mike this week when the Pt.Lincoln bushfires went on?? Too busy pissing in Lances ear which I am sure the sporting minister certainlycould have done, even Kate Ellis.

It's sport which means it's good.

I voted for the Formula 1 Grands Prix to be the biggest on our calendar. I remember them showing the Japanese GP which was always the week before in Suzuka, on the Pit Straight stand and 25,000 people turned up to watch it there.

It's absolutely pathetic that we only get a half hour summary on SBS. A huge event like this in our own state, and no real coverage. Surely th cycling gurus running the race could have struck a better coverage deal than that?

I went up to Stirling yesterday and the main street was packed. I had to park my car on a footpath :-$ and walk for ages to get to the course. Extremely glad I went got to see them whizz by 4 times and get some good photos. Sadly I couldn't get Armstrong

Very weird when the main bunch went past then everybody started to walk the streets to get a position for the final sprint finish then a cop bike screams past with the blokes who had given up for the day following not far behind.

The Clipsal would be the biggest event...if it goes by how many people in Adelaide are actually interested in it.

All the TDU does is give dickheads in lycra a reason to block our roads for a week....its amazing how many "cyclists" come out of the woodwork the week of the TDU...and then disappear.

It appears that they are all not from Adelaide. I stood next to a lycra clad couple from New Zealand they had brought their bikes with them. Also I followed a Victorian number plated vehicle back down the hill with bikes strapped to the roof

have you ever been to a stage Hawk? For an event that is free to attend it is well worth the cost in petrol to get there and watch
