Used to love the Birdman Rally each year, chuckling about those that would simply step into a box and jump off the jetty, compared to those that had very elaborate constructions that would glide for decent distances. I can't remember the exact year it was called off midway through the Rally, during a gale wind (1982 keeps coming to mind), because some of the gliders were being blown back onto Glenelg Jetty and I remember one person getting quite hurt when they blew straight back into the side of the jetty, jarring their back. I reckon that may have almost been the last one.
I was in the Birdman Rally in 1986! Entered on the spur of the moment then ignored it until the day before. Hurridly made a "Plane" from a foam esky, a cardboard box and some wine cask inners. Looked a treat! Billy J Smith (from Its a Knockout fame!) was the Mc. I "flew" (plumetted) 8 metres off Glenelg jetty in front of 60000 people, hit the bottom, cut my foot and had to swim to shore as the rescue boat was busy fishing a hanglider out. Made the TV coverage and was Mr Popularity at school.
Would do it again in a heartbeat
