What is your most memorable match?

Postby Lightning McQueen » Fri Jan 09, 2009 3:00 pm

What match always springs to mind when you are discussing classic games with your mates. The 400+ chase down by the Springboks against us would have to be right up there along with the Herschelle Gibbs/ Steve Waugh World Cup match.

2 matches for me, 1999 world cup semi final tie and new years day 1996 with Michael Bevan hitting a 4 of the final delivery after Australia were dead (I think they were 5-6 for 20-odd)
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

Have to agree with you LK. That match with Bevan always springs to mind as one of the best one dayers of all time. Also Roger Harper claiming a caught and bowled and Bevan didn't walk with about 7 or 8 overs to go.

Australia v West Indies at Adelaide Oval in 1992/93. Australia lost the Test by one run.

There are some others like Steve Waugh's 200 in Kingston, the Gilchrist and Langer partnership at Bellerive to beat Pakistan (only Gilly's second test), Australia beating England in Adelaide during the last Ashes. I could go on. Test cricket seems to produce those moments you will never forget. Graham Smith walking out to bat the other day is something i will always remember for example.

I watched it on the couch. When he was on about 60 I said to the missus "Sit down and watch this, you're going to see something special". I was right.
The following year we were in Perth on our honeymoon and I was desperate to keep in touch with the cricket, cos it was Tugga's last test (I was hoping he'd hit a century) and ended up sittin' with a grandpa for about 20 minutes with an old man who had a transistor radio going. I didn't see the end of his career but was keeping the tears back whilst sitting opposite the macaw enclosure.

Farewell matches are always a killer, Jason MacCartney's footy one was the most emotional games of anything I've ever witnessed.

Didn't see it but remember where I was that night too - watching the Doggies cream Norwood at the Parade.

That was a fantastic knock that one.

Blewie's debut hundred.

Listening to the end of the Shield final on the radio in the kitchen at Fasta Pasta, not allowing the bosses to open the store until the last ball was blocked.
I saw part of Gilchrist's innings too - left uni early to go have a look.

Peter McIntyre and Shane George, I think the whole state tuned in that day.

The 99 world cup semi for mine.
The 05 Ashes in England when Lee & Kasprowicz nearly pulled off a miracle win. Memorable for all the wrong reasons in the end.

If you look in the background of the photo of the SA boys getting the shield there's a massed crowd and right amongst it is a young Quinno Graham and Anthony Baird (who you might know from around Lizbef).

A one-dayer in Australia between NZ and South Africa around 97/98.
Also the game(s) when we were struggling with the bat and Michael Bevan rescued us.

Good Thread.

1999 World Cup Semi Vs South Africa
Bevans 4 against the Windies to win the unwinnable.
Steve Waughs Hundred against England at the SCG
The Ashes in 2005 (Especially Game 2 and 3)
Mark Waugh's Brilliant match winning century in South Africa on a dodgy wicket (Cant recall the Year)

Will certainly remember this match for the Smith Incident.
