First 35 degree day for this summer, when?

Postby spell_check » Mon Jan 05, 2009 9:36 pm

This December gone is the 9th to not have had a 35 degree C day:

12 1890 34.1
12 1910 34.4
12 1956 33.0
12 1959 33.3
12 1964 31.9
12 1992 34.8
12 1997 34.1
12 2001 33.6
12 2008 34.5

The date the next month had its first such day is:

25 1 1891
4 1 1911
12 1 1957
2 1 1960
9 1 1965
14 1 1993
1 1 1998
10 1 2002

This month already has ticked off 1911, 1960 and 1998. No days in the next week are forecasted to go above 30-32, so if it does turn out to go that way it will have ticked off 1957, 1965 and 2002.

So that would leave just 1891 and 1993.

I heard the other day that since 1998 the global temperature has not increased. It's actually on the decline.

Was that on the radio? I think I heard the same piece. I recall they were saying that it hasn't been declining, just not as hot as 1998 (it has been a little up and down since that year).

From what I understand, the average yearly temperatures haven't been above the 1998 level, but still something like 6 or 7 of the hottest years on record have been in the last 10 years.

While this summer may not have been warm so far, the last three August-Octobers have been pretty warm

In view of the obvious incipient global cooling I went out and bought two sleeping bags today.
One fairly standard +5 rated, and a very cheap thin one for warm weather use.

I agree about Australia Day, Bloods. But I'm guessing the first day will be a week day some time next week, maybe Tuesday the 20th.

The top 10 years by mean temperature for Adelaide are:

2007 18.31
1914 18.09
1921 17.98
1930 17.80
2000 17.78
1961 17.72
1988 17.70
1919 17.70
1934 17.68
1973 17.67

By minimum:
1973 13.43
1974 13.07
1975 13.00
2007 12.99
2000 12.97
1961 12.87
1965 12.80
1971 12.75
1972 12.72
1968 12.70

By maximum:
2007 23.63
1914 23.60
1921 23.34
2006 23.04
1919 22.99
1988 22.95
1930 22.90
1934 22.84
2005 22.82
1888 22.77

While 2005-07 are in the hottest maximums there, so is 1914, 1919 and 1921.
What is curious to me is the minimum temperatures. Except for 1964 and 1978, every year between 1961 and 1981 was above the average minimum temperature, 8 out of those 10 are in the top 10, including a 5 year period of 1971-75.

I hate the cold. I live for our summers and this summer is cold. I would be happy with 35 degrees and upwards every day and rain at night.

Potentially the first warm day of the summer will be next Tuesday - BOM reckons it could be 37.
