Honour among criminals

Does such a thing exist, or did it ever exist?
What prompts this is the Saturday night incident in Adelaide where a family home was hit with gun fire by occupants of a car that then sped off. Similar incidents have happened recently in Sydney, allegedly linked to Bikie turf wars.
Even if these incidents are rarely if ever random, it does raise the disturbing issue of having criminals fire off gun fire into houses where children are obviously living. Apparently the assumption must be that children are fair game now.
Once this was a taboo, and surely no self respecting crim would find it very courageous behaviour to take some pot shots from a car before speeding off in the middle of the night.
It's a step into barbarism if this is the case,
i know we've seen it all before in Australia, child murders, deliberate killing of police, untold cruelty to the old and weak, massacres etc. Apparently we rate highly for child homicide too.
Did the advent of the drug scene during the 60's and 70's destroy whatever standards may have existed with 99% of criminals? Does anybody really feel we are heading in the right direction.
