Graham Cornes did a fine job of conveying not only his own feelings but also those of the public who were all touched by "Sir" Donald Lindner both by his feats on the field and also his feats off the field. Well done Graham and RIP "Sir" Donald Lindner.

As a boy, I used to see Don Lindner turn up to the house across the road where his fiance lived. I would often say hello to Don. well aware of who he was. The year was 1967, and Don was having a sensational year, red hot favourite for the Magarey Medal that season.

As we felt as thought we knew Don, I recall the disappointment in our house the evening he was beaten for the medal on countback, and it was very fitting that he was finally awarded a retrospective medal many years later.

For years afterwards, whenever Norwood played the Roosters at Prospect I would wander into the North Adelaide bar and you would always see Don, resplendent in his North Adelaide jacket and his coiffured mane of thick grey hair, you always admired how well and fit he looked for a man of his years.

This news comes as a bit of a shock, as it would to all lovers of SANFL football, and especially to those of us with so many great memories of football in the 1960s.

RIP Don, one of the game's greats.

I had the pleasure to speak with Don a few times and he was an impressive character. He could tell a story, with a bit of humour thrown in. He played tennis at Memorial Drive with some old blokes but did mention one member of their team was a kid of about 12, only about 60 years younger than Don!
Always well presented, friendly, had a bit of presence about him.
What a footballer he was, obviously very much a family orientated man, a man of deep Christian faith too with his Lutheran beliefs. It's a pity more men aren't like Don. Should be a very large funeral and i hope a fitting send off.

Thanks Chuck.

We had a bit to do with each other. Don and my poppa are/were two of the fittest old blokes around. He was looking forward to playing a lot more tennis with Don, but obviously circumstances meant this didnt quite work out.
