Melbourne Night Life

Postby RustyCage » Wed Dec 24, 2008 8:39 pm

Hey all, am heading over to Melbourne in a couple of days, and am after peoples advice on pubs to go to in the Melbourne CBD. In Adelaide I usually go to the Crown and Anchor, so am after any place that is similar. Cheers for any help you can give.

Where I live in Melbourne we have nightlife - mostly possums and koalas.
Day time it is wallabies, and feral deer, and bunnies, in the back yard.
The CBD is about 38K due west...

Can't go past The Espy at St Kilda. Pony on Little Collins St is great too.

My fave place was the Night Cat in Johnston St Fitzroy.

It's not to everyone's liking but very chic. Depending on the night you can get anything from jazz, to Latin, soul, funk, hip hop the list continues.

Live bands and close to a few other pubs and clubs. Not far from the city either.

Others -

Young & Jackson
Cherry Bar
Gin palace
Hairy Canary
Purple Emerald
Myers Place (Bar - serves Long Necks only)

Please note - my knowledge is circa 2002 (barring Night Cat) so have a gander at the following....

as people have said, if you go from pub to pub in Melbourne central, you will find enough to keep yourself busy.

If you normally drink at the Cranka I'd go with Revolver or The Pony Club as Punk and Quichey suggested. Quichey also suggested The Espy which does have some good bands on at this time of year but can be full of CUBS and wannabees who just go there
"cos they are in St Kilda and that" and wouldn't have a clue.
If you are sticking with the CBD the Ding Dong lounge (formally the International) is worth checking out. The stairs leading up have a mural which features a huge painting of a Black Flag album and Beasts of Bourbon album they also they have artists on there such as Spencer Jones and Rowland Howard regularly so it gives you some idea of what it's like. 8) Punters are generally easy going and friendly.

If heading to the inner burbs. The Tote in Collingwood is still a pretty cool place with a good vibe.

Avoid King Street and the Casino at all costs. Full of CUBS and wankers in Elwood T-Shirts. ](*,)

Possums are like foxes - there are local family lines that have not seen the countryside in many generations. ;)
We had them when we lived in Malvern too.

I enjoyed a great night at the Pony last month. Then spent the following night at the European/Belgian (can't remember which) Beer Caf, which is right next door.
Two very different but reasonable pub experiences.
Then if you're into karaoke, there's a place in Chinatown called Charlton's - an interesting experience.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Cashed Up Bogan.

I think the Elwood T-Shirts have been taken over by Abercombe and Fitch though. Although the Ram-Ones could make a come back. ;)
