Ben Cousins

Talk on the national game

Richmond will pick him up today according to Tim Watson on Sunrise this morning. The fans were spewing when they heard they might not be selecting him in the PSD so Tiger, er People power appears to have spoken down at Punt Road.

Interesting to note that Richmond do not yet have a major sponsor for next year (Melbourne are in the same boat I believe). Cutting it a bit thin aren't they? Might be tough to get a sponsor as well due to the current financial situation.

I am only using a guess here, but what would a major sponsor contribute on a yearly basis? My guess is about $3-4m.

If that is the going rate, there or there abouts, pehaps a major sponsor of the Tigers or Demons could 'get away with it' for $2 or $2.5m?

For once,Im glad the club listened to the most important people to them, the fans. You can find sponsors ( not easily ) elsewhere but the core of a football club is its fans and if they want Cousins, good on them for speaking up.

As I said in this thread earlier whoever picks him up will be in a better position to win games if he is fit and firing. We all know Richmond need all the help they can get.

The Western Bulldogs are the other ones without a major sponsor.

How three clubs could head into Xmas without one is just a tad scary for the game
especially Melbourne.

Will be interesting to see in a couple of hours whether Richmond take Cus, and
then to see who they get to sponsor them.

Looks like they will CLICK HERE

I agree, good luck to Cousins.
I hope this Richmond venture works out for him - as mixed up as he may have once been, there is no doubting that he is an immensely gifted footballer. Well worth the risk taken by Richmond I believe.
If he can keep his head screwed on and hamstrings supple, then who knows what he is capable of doing at Punt Rd....

You are correct. If teams do not currently have a major sponsor then finding one now will be tough. There is no doubt about that. With the current climate sponsorship is the first thing to go.

I think Wallace was prepared to take a punt with cousins because if Richmond don't make the finals he may very well be out a job by the time 09 finishes.

He is certainly well worth the risk. Richmond have given up virtually nothing to get him, they don't have a major sponsor to lose so what harm is there? The upside if he does the right thing is that they gain one of the most gifted players of our generation. If he does the wrong thing they have a failed pre season draft pick.

On the major sponsor front there will be an enormous amount of attention on the Richmond Football Club over the summer and all of 2009 and beyond. There will be companies falling over each other to get the kind of exposure they will get as major sponsor of Richmond now. This really is a very smart move by a club more renowned for making blunders. Good luck to them.

I did like how the Herald Sun waited for him to be drafted and then the day after released this story. But I guess we should make a front page story about all the footballers he knows. After all in the 80's he did enjoy and ale down at the St.Kilda football club.

Also interesting to look at some of the names that missed out:

Damien Pevrill
Nick Davis
Nathan Carrol
Aaron Fiora
Adem Yze - Probably expected really.

I would have thought Pevrill would have been worth a punt, but I guess he'll be playing VFL now.
