I'll add a few to the list.....

Pete Smith - Gepps Cross. What a freak but has played two or three league games...Could have played AFL if the work ethic was right.

Chris Clonan - Gepps Cross. Great work ethic and finds the ball in tight traffic regularly. Extremely hard to tackle and kicks goals. Disposal only slightly lacking for league level and height has always held him back. Most valuable player in most teams.

Ben Halliday - Elizabeth/Gepps/Gawler South/Salis North. Best tap ruckman I have played with. Reads play beautifully when playing a kick behind and is utterly courageous. Definately could play league football in his prime.

That will do for now.

Big Phil wrote:Played with a few guys at Eastern Park a few years ago who I reckon were pretty good. a guy named Carey Payne, small goal kicking on baller / half forward. Think Payney was on Centrals list but didn't play any games, now coaching E.Park I think ?

Then there was a big, tall, skinny ruckman/forward named Corey Noble, very gutsy player, great team man, top bloke...

Also, Mathew Paul (won D3 Medal I think) hap a great leap, good set of hands and could finsih off in fornt of goal.

Big Phil... :D :D :D

would have to agree with you there seen the guy take some of biggest grabs, and kick some of
the freakiest goals payney used to change games just like that i believe he coaching out there now.sure paul still playing out there not sure about noble.

Now I'm too young to remember him (I'm mates with his son) but I'm told that from Old Iggies, Old Tom Kelly was as good a player as anyone who every played in the amateur league. Apparently a few teams tried to get him out to play for them but he was too loyal to his roots.

Have to agree on Halliday- best ruckmen i've played against. Gun footballer at amateur level, might have been interesting to see how he would have faired at SANFL level. I'm sure he would have excelled.

I think Barry Pfeiffer (father of Darren now at Carlton) would be hard to beat. Barry played at Birdwood in the HFL throughout the 70's and 80's. Won 4 premierships, 2 mail medals 77 and 87 (runner-up 9 seasons in between) and 15 club best and fairests. As a result the club champion now receives the Barry Pfeiffer Trophy.

I seen a few since i've been around a bit..
80's: Terry Dwyer (Roxby Dist ex Broken Hill) - kicked 25G 9B in a game once, record at the time I believe.
90's: Gary Briggs (Pt Augusta/Andamooka) - Mercurial
2000's: Shayne Shultz - could've made it easy & Simon Hucks - if he wanted too (Wunkar)
Good Luck Ovies!
