Champions League is back on this week.

Man U 3 - Aalborg 0

Absolute peach of a goal by Berbatov. He is class all over and scored 2 on the night with the other from Shrek.

Ar5ena1 4 - Porto 0

Van Persie and Adebayor each scoring a brace. I rate Van Persie.

BATE Borisov 2 Juventus 2
Zenit St Petersburg 1 Real Madrid 2

Here's a quick round up of tonights action

Celtic are facing a tough task to advance to the last 16 after slipping to a 1-0 defeat away to Villarreal. Skipper Marcos Senna struck the only goal of the game midway through the second half when he curled a free-kick over the wall and inside the post to continue Celtic's woeful away record in the Champions League.

Dimitar Berbatov struck his first goals for Manchester United as the Champions League holders won 3-0 at AaB Aalborg. In an open game in Denmark, United took the lead midway through the first half when Wayne Rooney swept home from Ryan Giggs' incisive pass.
United wasted several chances before extending their advantage on 55 minutes when Dimitar Berbatov pounced on a defensive mistake to volley home his first goal for the club.
And, just like buses, another one for Berbatov came along on 79 minutes when the Bulgarian acrobatically volleyed Cristiano Ronaldo's cross past Aalborg keeper Karim Zaza.

Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor both scored twice as Arsenal ultimately cruised to a 4-0 victory over 2004 winners Porto at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal were given a few early scares by Porto before making the breakthrough on 31 minutes thanks to Van Persie's near-post finish.
Adebayor headed home a second goal on 40 minutes and, three minutes after half-time, Van Persie weighed in with his second of the game. Togo striker Adebayor emulated Van Persie's brace on 71 minutes by converting from the penalty spot after Nicklas Bendtner had been brought down.

Dynamo Kiev made it two draws in a row after a 0-0 stalemate against Fenerbahce following a terrible game in Turkey.

Real Madrid are firmly in control of Group H after surviving heavy second-half pressure to win 2-1 at Zenit St Petersburg. Ruud van Nistelrooy's 55th Champions League goal after 31 minutes secured back-to-back victories in the group for Real. The Spanish champions had gone in front through Tomas Hubocan's early own goal, before big-money signing Danny briefly drew Zenit level.

Juventus are second in the group after battling back to snatch a 2-2 draw against BATE Borisov in Belarus. BATE, in their first home match in the Champions League group phase, enjoyed a dream start by scoring twice inside the opening 23 minutes through Sergei Krivets and Igor Stasevich.
But Juve were level by half-time as Vincenzo Iaquinta pulled one back on 29 minutes before the striker equalised just before the break.

Bayern Munich are top of Group F after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at home with the dominant force in French football Lyon.
Lyon forged ahead at the Allianz Arena on 26 minutes when Juninho Pernambucano's free-kick flew into the net with the help of Martin Demichelis.
Bayern had lost their last two Bundesliga games, but rallied to draw level on 52 minutes after Ze Roberto headed home Miroslav Klose's cross.

Fiorentina missed out on the chance to post a first group win after drawing 0-0 at home to 1986 European Cup winners Steaua Bucharest.

Liverpool 3 - 1 PSV
Famagusta 3 - 1 Panathinaikos

Round Up

Keane scored his first, and Gerrard his 100th goal for Liverpool as the 2005 winners eased to a 3-1 home win over PSV.
The two sides met four times during the 2006/07 season and the Reds again took the upper hand with Dutch attacker Dirk Kuyt opening the scoring after just five minutes.
On 34 minutes, there was relief all around Anfield as Keane swept home his first goal for the club following Fernando Torres' cross from the right wing. And there was another landmark on 76 minutes when Gerrard reached a century of Liverpool goals by driving home a low free-kick.
PSV had not scored in the four games two seasons ago, but at least improved upon that record on 78 minutes when Danny Koevermans snared a consolation.

Sergio Aguero continued his impressive form in the Champions League as Atletico edged to a 2-1 win over Marseille at Vicente Calderon. Argentine ace Aguero scored twice against PSV a fortnight ago and required just four minutes to put Atletico in front at home to Marseille.
The French side responded to level on 16 minutes through Mamadou Niang's header, but Atletico took the points through Raul Garcia's 22nd minute winner.

Chelsea were given a stiff test in being held 0-0 by Romanian underdogs Cluj as Drogba was stretchered off. The striker was making his first appearance in the Champions League final last season and his exit was the notable incident in a game of few clear-cut chances.

Roma put their Champions League campaign back on track after a 3-1 victory away to Bordeaux.
Bordeaux took the lead on 18 minutes through Yoann Gourcuff, but their game-plan fell apart after Henrique's 37th minute dismissal.
Mirko Vucinic headed Roma level just past the hour mark before Julio Baptista struck twice inside the closing 20 minutes.

Claudio Pizarro missed a golden late chance for Werder Bremen as the Bundesliga side drew 1-1 at Inter.
Maicon's delicate chip put Inter ahead on 14 minutes, but Pizarro - on loan at Bremen from Chelsea - stabbed home at the far post for a point on 63 minutes and then turned an injury-time chance into the side-netting.

Anorthosis marked Cyprus Independence Day with a first Champions League group victory after beating Panathinaikos 3-1.
Jose Sarriegi inexplicably headed into his own net on 11 minutes to gift Anorthosis a lead which was doubled on 16 minutes through Sinisa Dobrasiniovic.
Dimitris Salpingidis pulled one back for Panathinaikos on 28 minutes after Jeffrey Leiwakabessy handballed, but Anorthosis netted a third on 78 minutes through Hawar Mulla Mohammed.

Lionel Messi struck twice in the final three minutes as Barcelona posted an important 2-1 win away to Shakhtar.
Ilsinho put the Ukrainians ahead just before half-time, only for Messi to level three minutes from the end and then pop up with the winner in the last minute.

Leandro Romagnoli and Derlei scored second-half goals as Sporting won 2-0 at home to Swiss outfit Basel.

Round Up

Manchester United came out on top in their Battle of Britain clash with Celtic.
Defending champions United enjoyed the better of a lively first half at Old Trafford, with Celtic sloppy in possession, and found themselves in front after 30 minutes in controversial style.
Berbatov proved he has now well and truly settled into his new surroundings following his summer transfer deadline day move from Tottenham as he opened the scoring.
The Bulgarian striker survived Celtic's appeals of offside to apply the slightest of touches and prod past Artur Boruc after John O'Shea had flicked on at a corner.
And it was Berbatov - again from a possible offside position - who grabbed United's second as he followed up a rifled Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick, which Boruc could only palm, to tap in on 51 minutes.
Rooney - who it appears cannot help but score at present - then added gloss to United's victory as he demonstrated all of his recent guile to take a touch on the edge of the box, turn, and curl past Boruc with 14 minutes left on the clock.

Meanwhile, Arsenal issued a statement of their intent on the European stage as they were at their swashbuckling best to end Fenerbahce's 15-game unbeaten home record.
Arsenal also impressed and heaped misery on Luis Aragones as the Gunners stunned the former Spain chief's Fenerbahce with two goals in the space of 60 seconds with an apparent disregard for their host's intimidating record at Sukru Saracoglu Satdium.
At their aesthetic best Arsenal took the lead on 10 minutes as Adebayor ran on to an inch-perfect Cesc Fabregas pass - with Walcott demonstrating nifty footwork to avoid an offside decision - to slot past Volkan Demirel.
One minute later, Walcott was again at the heart of the action as the England star rounded home goalkeeper Volkan to double his side's advantage.
The two-goal cushion, however, was short-lived for the Premier League outfit as on 19 minutes Mikael Silvestre was unfortunate to put past his own shot-stopper Manuel Almunia after getting in the way of a fizzed Daniel Guiza cross.
But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's concerns did not last long as Abou Diaby, took advantage of some adrift home defending on 22 minutes to calmly add the Gunners' third.
And four minutes after the half-time break, aided and abetted by more comedy capers in the heart of the Fenerbahce defence, Song fired in Arsenal's fourth with style.
Spain international Guiza hit a consolation for Fenerbahce with 12 minutes remaining, but it was far too little, far too late as Arsenal comfortably secured the three points with a late Ramsey strike.

French champions Lyon came out on top of a eight-goal thriller with Steaua Bucharest to record their first victory in this season's tournament.
Lyon, however, were rattled early on as Steaua netted twice in the opening 11 minutes in Bucharest.
First Arthuro converted a sublime cross from George Ogararu on eight minutes and 11 minutes later Dorin Goian added a second as he met a Banel Nicolita corner with a combination of head, neck and back.
Lyon, though, were deservedly back on level terms as Kader Keita converted in stunning style on 23 minutes and highly-rated Karim Benzema equalised shortly after the half-hour mark.
But Steaua were again in front on the stroke of half-time as Ovidiu Petre climbed the highest to head in at a corner.
The seesaw encounter continued in style after half time and it was Lyon who enjoyed the better as Fred pounced on 69 minutes and Benzema grabbed his personal second two minutes later.
Fred made sure of the points with a fifth goal in injury time to move Lyon second in Group F.

Juventus have made their worst start to a season in 28 years, leaving manager Ranieri clinging to his job at Stadio delle Alpi, but a vital 2-1 home victory over Real Madrid will silence some doubters.
It was Juve who took an early lead in sensational style as Italian veteran Alessandro Del Piero curled in from 25 yards with Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas an awestruck spectator.
Juventus, who have won the European Cup on two occasions, then doubled their advantage four minutes after half time as Amauri headed in at the back post with the aid of a deflection off Real defender Gabriel Heinze.
La Liga champions Real pulled a goal back on 66 minutes as Ruud van Nistelrooy headed his 61st goal in the Champions League, but Juve clung on for the points to move to the summit of Group H.

Bayern boss Klinsmann has also come in for criticism following a shaky domestic start, but his side continued their impressive European form with a 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Group F.
Germany international Miroslav Klosse gave the home side the lead after only four minutes as he latched on to Luca Toni's header to finish with aplomb.
And then on 25 minutes Bastian Schweinsteiger demonstrated equal composure to deftly add a second after sending Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey the wrong way.
And in the dying minutes Bayern's Ze Roberto ensured Klinsmann will sleep soundly as he added a spectacular third.

Villarreal remain hot on the heels of United in Group E as they defeated Aalborg 6-3 at El Madrigal.
Marek Saganowski gave Danish side Aalborg a surprise lead after 19 minutes, but Villarreal - suggested by some as potential dark horses in this season's competition - slipped into gear.
Former United forward Giuseppe Rossi (28) equalised and five minutes later Spanish full-back Joan Capdevila unleashed an unstoppable, half-volleyed, drive to hand Manuel Pellegrini's side the lead.
But the Yellow Submarine's advantage lasted just three minutes as Aalborg, managed by ex-Arsenal chief Bruce Rioch, restored parity through a dinked Thomas Envoldsen finish.
After the break Villarreal again turned on the style as Joseba Llorente (67) followed up a Marcos Senna drive and the forward then grabbed his side's fourth three minutes later as he converted after good work from Robert Pires.
Andreas Johansson pulled a goal back for Aalborg with 13 minutes remaining, but French veteran Pires showed all of his experience two minutes later to restore Villarreal's three goal advantage and Llorente wrapped up his hat-trick in the dying stages.

Porto were defeated 1-0 by Dynamo Kiev in Tueday night's only quiet contest to end Jesualdo' Ferreira's side's phenomenal record of one defeat in their last 21 games at Estadio do Drago.
The visitors struck after 27 minutes as Olexandr Aliyev placed a free-kick beyond the reach of Porto goalkeeper Nuno to secure the points in Group G.

Zenit St Petersburg and BATE Borisov both look unlikely to qualify from Group H after playing out a 1-1 draw in Tuesday's early kick-off.
An enthralling opening 45 minutes at Petrovsky Stadium saw the woodwork rattled on three separate occasions as Zenit efforts from Fatih Tekke and Danny sandwiched Igor Stasevich's stab for BATE.
Seven minutes after the interval, the opening goal arrived as - against the run of play - Belarusian outfit BATE stunned their hosts with a textbook counter-attacking punch when half-time substitute Pavel Nekhaychik slotted in from close range.
Tekke deservedly rescued a point for Zenit - who remain without a win in this year's competition - with nine minutes remaining as he broke the BATE offside trap to volley an equaliser, but the draw leaves both sides facing a battle to progress.

Must say, that although I was pissed about they way he behaved in his last couple of months at Spurs, I always liked Berba. He's a professional, brilliant player and it was a pleasure to have seen him live. For someone that moves as little as possible, he still pops up just at the right time in the right spot to do something magical.

I would have lost count of the number of times someone in the crowd would slate him for being lazy and yell out " MOVE Berbatov you muppet, MOVE!!!" just before Berba chimed in with a sublime little assist flick or thunderbolt of his own.

Class. It's tragic to see him in that horrid red strip.

Round Up

Liverpool and Atletico remain joint leaders of Group D after an enthralling 1-1 draw in Madrid.
Having opened his Reds account in the 3-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven, Keane fired his side in front after 14 minutes with a cool finish from Steven Gerrard's precise pass.
Liverpool remained on top for the rest of the first half but Atletico responded strongly after the break with Argentine star Sergio Aguero coming on for the ineffectual Luis Garcia.
Maniche was denied an equaliser by a poor offside decision, before Jose Reina pushed Simao's low effort against the post.
Atletico kept pushing and drew level in the 83rd minute when Simao tucked a neat shot past Reina after being played in by Diego Forlan.

Chelsea made it seven points from three games in Group A with a win against Roma, who are now in danger of missing out on a place in the last 16.
Chelsea came closest to breaking the deadlock in a quiet first half when a Frank Lampard free-kick skimmed off the top of the crossbar but Luiz Felipe Scolari's side, still without several key players, were far from their best.
The Blues looked to push forward with more urgency in the second half and were rewarded 12 minutes from time when Terry rose to powerfully head home Lampard's cross.

Bordeaux recorded their first win in the second game in Group A as they overcame CFR Cluj 1-0.
The Romanian side had been level with Chelsea on four points, but they were undone by a Cadu own goal in the 54th minute, and were then reduced to 10 men when Eugen Trica was sent off in the 90th minute.

PSV Eindhoven and Marseille were both desperate to claim three points at Philips Stadion after defeats to Liverpool and Atletico in their opening two matches in Group D, and it was the Dutch team who ran out 2-0 winners.
It was evident that the sides were low on confidence in an uninspiring first half, before Ibrahim Afellay missed an open goal for PSV moments after the restart.
The miss did not prove costly, however, as Danny Koevermans nodded in Stijn Wuytens' corner to give PSV a lead after 72 minutes.
Koevermans then added a second to keep PSV's slim hopes of finishing in the top two alive, while Marseille must now look to win their last three games to climb back into contention.

Barcelona continued their relentless march towards qualification with a thumping win over Basle.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring in stunning fashion after just four minutes as he started, and then rounded off, a flowing move by slotting home Daniel Alves' delightful chip at the back post.
Barca doubled their lead on 15 minutes when Xavi picked out Sergio Busquets for the midfielder to score his first Champions League goal, and Bojan Krkic then made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute with a shot from the edge of the area.
Krkic grabbed his second of the night in the 46th minute after a swift Barcelona counter-attack, and two minutes later Xavi drove in a powerful fifth to pile the misery on Basle.

Sporting Lisbon moved three points clear of Shakhtar Donetsk in the battle for second place after a dramatic 1-0 victory in Ukraine.
Shakhtar enjoyed most of the possession but a clever piece of skill by Derlei in the 76th minute created the opening for Liedson to slide home the winner.

Cypriot minnows Anorthosis Famagusta fell to their first defeat as they lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.
Inter were initially frustrated but broke down their resistance on the stroke of half-time when Adriano headed in Maicon's pinpoint delivery from the right wing.
Anorthosis were not able to battle back to leave Inter in pole position to progress to the second round from Group B.

Werder Bremen played out their third consecutive draw as they were held 2-2 by Panathinaikos.
There was a hint of controversy about Bremen's goal in the 29th minute as Per Mertesacker appeared to control Mesut Ozil's free-kick high on his arm before lashing past Alexandros Tzorvas.
Panathinaikos equalised seven minutes later when Vaggelis Mantzios sent a looping header into the net from Gabriel's cross.
The Greek side then took the lead through Mantzios in the 68th minute, only for Hugo Almeida to equalise with seven minutes remaining.

Round Up

Chelsea suffered a shock UEFA Champions League defeat at the hands of Roma while Liverpool needed a last-gasp penalty to draw against Atletico Madrid.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's side travelled to the Italian capital hoping to book their place in the next phase, but suffered a 3-1 reverse against the struggling Serie A side in their Group A clash.

Steven Gerrard was the saviour at Anfield once again, winning and converting a questionable penalty in the fifth minute of injury time in front of the Kop to secure a 1-1 draw against Atletico.

Marseille's 3-0 victory over PSV means that the Reds and Atletico remain favourites to progress from Group D, while Bordeaux's 2-1 win away to CFR Cluj cranks up the tension in Group A.

Barcelona and Sporting have already secured qualification from Group C after the Camp Nou outfit drew 1-1 with Basel and the Portuguese club defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0.

Inter Milan needed a late equaliser to salvage a point from their six-goal thriller against Anorthosis Famagusta in Group B, while Panathinaikos claimed their first victory with a 3-0 win away to Werder Bremen.

Round Up

Manchester United were forced to wait for their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as they left it late to earn a point at Celtic, while Arsenal were frustrated by Fenerbahce in North London.

Gordon Strachan's side recorded a memorable 1-0 victory over United in the group stages in 2006 and it was almost the same story this year as Scott McDonald netted an opener.
Ahead of kick-off, Celtic had won eight of their 13 Champions League games in Glasgow and a buoyant home crowd reflected that statistic, but United dominated the encounter at Parkhead.
Holders United - who would have advanced to the last 16 with three points - enjoyed plenty of possession and put their hosts under immense pressure, but were grateful to a late Ryan Giggs equaliser to stay level with Villarreal at the top of Group E.

Meanwhile, an injury-hit Arsenal remain at the peak of Group G, but they could not find a way past Fenerbahce in a frustrating stalemate at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners went into the encounter in the knowledge that three points coupled with a Dynamo Kiev victory over Porto would secure a place in the latter stages, but neither result materialised.

Elsewhere, Alessandro Del Piero was the hero of the piece as the Italian veteran scored the goals which ensured Juventus were the only team to progress to the last 16 with a victory at nine-time winners Real Madrid in Group H.

Round Up

Arsenal and Manchester United are through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League but Celtic are out of Europe.

The Gunners finally put their recent troubles behind them although they rode their luck at times and left it late before seeing off Dynamo Kiev 1-0 in Group G.

Reigning European champions United travelled to Villarreal and left Spain with a point after a drab 0-0 draw which sees both teams progress from Group E.

Celtic's miserable away record in Europe continues as they were beaten by Aalborg in Denmark, although the result from El Madrigal means Gordon Strachan's side would have been out even if they had won.

Porto have joined Arsenal in the knockout stages thanks to their 2-1 victory away to Fenerbahce in Group G's other match.

Juventus and Real Madrid secured their progress from Group H with Zenit St Petersburg given the scant consolation of being able to defend their Uefa Cup crown after drawing with the Italians, while Real triumphed 1-0 against BATE Borisov.

Lyon and Bayern Munich are the teams to emerge unscathed from Group F with only top spot left to play for after their respective victories over Fiorentina and Steaua Bucharest.

Round up

Liverpool clinched their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, but Chelsea will have to wait to join their Premier League rivals in the knockout phase.

Steven Gerrard was the hero for the Reds yet again as the 2005 winners overcame Marseille at Anfield.

But Chelsea proved to be less successful against French opposition as Frank Lampard was sent off in a 1-1 draw in Bordeaux.

Rafa Benitez marked a record-breaking European game in charge of Liverpool with a 1-0 win over Marseille which sealed progression from Group D.
The only goal of the game arrived on 23 minutes when Xabi Alonso whipped in a superb cross from the right wing which was headed home expertly by Gerrard at the back post.

Atletico Madrid have joined Liverpool in the next round after battling to a 2-1 victory at home to PSV Eindhoven.
PSV contributed to their own downfall at an empty Vicente Calderon as slack defending allowed Simao to open the scoring on 14 minutes.
Atletico increased their lead just before the half-hour mark when Maxi Rodriguez lashed home after a corner ricocheted into his path.
Danny Koevermans pulled a goal back for PSV two minutes into the second half to leave the Dutch side fighting with Marseille for a Uefa Cup spot.

Chelsea are still to make it a clean sweep of English teams in the last 16 after being held to a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux.

It's not really that difficult, it would take a huge disaster for any English club to not make it to the knockout rounds.

The group stages are pretty boring these days.

IF, Cluj can beat Chavski at the Lane and Bordeaux can beat Roma in Rome, then the Chavs are out of yet another cup comp.

And like you C_P, I am [-o< [-o< the get the arse.

The beauty of the situation above, is that they'd also miss out on UEFA Cup, which is a bit of a shame b/c I'd love to knock them out of that too!

Nope. Realistically they'll cock it up because they are Chavski and they don't win cups.

I'll be cheering for the Gypos.
