Ben Cousins

Talk on the national game

Peter Maynard mentioned on Triple M this morning that it would be worse for him NOT to get picked up. Would crush his confidence and he would be more likely to relapse.

I tend to agree with that statement.

Adelaide is the last place Ben Cousins needs to be... Ports reasons for wanting him would be purely selfish, they would do it for no other reason than to boost their own attendances, moreso than giving a top player a second chance. The pressure put on him in Adelaide was enough to drive our last star out of town (and funnily enough to Western Australia)

If Cousins (or any player for that matter) is likely to breach the anti-drugs code, then personally I reckon location is irrelevant.

Although I take your point Chicky, if someone's going to get into recreational drugs, then a choice and subsequent decision will come, and for mine that can happen anywhere in Oz, and is more about the individual.

Yeah but the moral of the story was he didn't want to stay in adelaide anyway..

You'd hope Adelaide would be beyond that kind of idol-isation now...

I was more thinking of succumbing to the extra pressure of being a big fish in a small pond CP.. a la Carey, Modra etc...

Yeah I knew what you were getting at, I certainly don't disagree about additional scrunity and pressure that can come from that.

You think a return to any club would produce levels of scrutiny he has not been accustomed too in recent months?

If he does not get picked up in the coming drafts I would be very, very surprised. With all the talk about this being the best pool of talent for some time in the National draft I for one minute do not believe a kid being picked up at 50+ is a better prospect than a Ben Cousins with 3 or 4 years left in him.

You would think only those clubs who consider themselves close to being legitimate contenders, and believe they have enough juniors in their talent pool to punt on an investment, would take him.

So who fits that bill IYO Danielsahn? Hawks, Cats, Dogs, Power, Richmond, Carlton, Brisbane?

I think you may find Modra was given a number of chances at Adelaide.

Carlton and Essendon are the first two that pop to mind. However,Port and the Doggies also,IMO,seem to be in a similar position.

I know that there will be a lot of scrutiny on Cousins if he gets picked up, but a lot of clubs a picking on all the negatives that they see and not focusing on some of the positives that Cousins might be able to give to the clubs. What happens if he recovers well and manages to play another 5 years of AFL at the top level and teaches the kids a lot of invaluble footy lessons?

He is/was an absolute football superstar...

I think it is a massive call to pick him up I think there are more negatives than positives especially at his age. All he needs to do is make one mistake and it could cost a club their major sponsor.

They've been pretty quiet on the whole issue. Every other club is screaming "no thanks".

It'd be a shame for him to end up there.

I would be pretty pleased if the Power picked him up, it could lift the crowds, and send a buzz around the town! :D

Port would also get more media coverage inter-state, overall it could be a good thing for the Power.

I don't know why sponsors of clubs are getting so scared off by the prospect of Cousins being recruited.

The club would not be inheriting all the disrepute from Cousins tenure at West Coast. The Eagles brought that upon themselves by continually doing an ostrich impersonation over his indiscretions. They turned a blind eye too many times and created the fiasco.
All that previous dirty laundry doesn't have to carry over to his new club and tarnish it and it's sponsors. The AFL has given him the green light (subject of course to strict conditions) and the slate should therefore be wiped clean.

All they need to worry about is the future, not what has gone before.

I agree with you, but the fact of the matter is that the world is full of Judge Mentals from the Redneck County Court who want to hang him high.

Ballhog's call is the most accurate - football is increasingly corporate and the corporates will "decide who enters this country".
