In direct competition with Aussie rules. Hmmmmm. Thing is Soccer is a winter sport, so it makes sense but how do you think it will affect crowds, particularly with the fledgling new clubs ?

The TV rights would obviously have to be revamped because of clashes with the AFL on Fox, and the Victory are the only team to use an AFL ground for home matches so they'd be the only ones to have to re-negotiate their venue.

Do you think there is enough room for both codes.

I know in the UK we have Rugby Union and soccer at the same time, but rugby League moved to a summer program, mainly to boost crowds

but they are due to move to a purpose built rectangle stadium by the end of 2009. and then only share with the Storm which would be much easier to work around than the AFL clubs.

It would make more sense to have the season run later as didn't they move to a summer competition in the late 80's/early 90's to avoid the Football codes

Maybe they feel they are now strong enough to compete with Aussie Rules again H31.

In SA the two AvFL clubs haven't been setting the world on fire and Adelaide Utd made it to the ACL so there is plenty of local interest that they can build on there. I think they decent crowds too these day. Jabber or Thiele could confrim this better than me.

If you look at the East coast where they have good representation and plans for two more teams next year, Aussie Rules has never been strong. I think I read that rugby Leaue has been in the doldrums recently so it would make some sense to try and capture that market by going head to head.

I guess, the one club that might find it tough would be Melbourne.

John, on the contrary, Melbourne would probably do OK, as they have a vast population base, and with the new stadium being built would get a decent crowd through.

Adelaide & Perth IMO, would struggle. A lot of people wouldn't "back" up and do both a AFL & A-League game in the same weekend, where in NSW where the NRL crowds average about 15 k per game, you'd get the crowds to the A-League (Newcastle may be the exception).

The problem the A-League has is it is hard to schedule mid week games especially for long haul teams such as Perth & Townsville (when they come in). If they could schedule midweek clashed like they do in the EPL & CCC, then they could start the season later.

The AFL is well established in VIC/WA & SA and it'd always remain a secondary code, where as the A-League is going head to head with the AFL in NSW & QLD (and I can see the A-League coming out on top).

I hope the keep the season start as late as possible and have mid week games to alleviate the possibility of starting early....

For the record average crowds for 2008. AFL = 36969, Super 14's = 21 834, NRL = 15591 & A-League = 11666.

What about the bandwagon though Jabber. With Adelaide making the ACL final this year and the publicity that went withit, have crowds not got stronger this year?

Not really. Only 9500 at the game Saturday night, but it was bloody cold (should have IMO got 13K). Hindmarsh is a good stadium but bloody exposed when cold n windy. Winter would be an absolute prick of a place to watch sport......

Where the bandwagoner thing comes in is kids wanting to play Soccer instead of Football. Pretty sure Soccer is the most played junior sport in Australia. Then as the kids get older they move over to AFL/NRL.

And as everyone knows when the Bandwagon comes to a halt (ACL final) it soon empties, however if Adelaide push on this season and make the finals they'll get super crowds again.....
