glenelg v richmond 1974 (the teams please)

Postby bayman » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:47 pm

i have a feeling it was on adelaide cup day (definately a monday public holiday) & richmond wore from memory red & yellow stripes (similar to the north melbourne style of jumper), now i know the bays won but does anyone (spelly) know who played in both teams ?

presuming royce hart & steve hywood played would they be the only 2 players that played for both teams ? (when they lined up against each other)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I can remember a pre season game in 75 or 76 against Richmond.
Kerls was coach
At Footy Park
Was Hywood at the Bays then?
Neil Balme played and it was a crackerjack game

The 76 game was a Wills Cup match played on the Adelaide Cup Monday. The cover of the programme looks like the Australian Championship match from 73. Former Woodville ruckman Craig McKellar is flying high.

What was the game in Richmond wore this monstrosity to prevent a clash ? Was in 1978 ? Wills Cup ?

The teams for that game would be good too !!

Picture from the champions of Australia clash at Adelaide Oval in 73 when the Bays went in wearing a plain gold guernsey. Is that Balme as well?

It's such a shame we don't play these kind of games anymore...

Would love to see Centrals take on an AFL side or Premier from another State League, say Subiaco...

Both sides were depleted for this match. Richmond were missing Royce Hart, Kevin Bartlett, Kevin Morris, Dick Clay, John Pitura, Neville Roberts amd Bryan Wood; while Glenelg had Brian Colbey, Peter Millard, Jim Rawson, Greg Croser, David Holst and Bob Paech out of the side.

Glenelg had 21 named, so one of these did not play:

F: Caldwell, D.Phillis, McInerney
HF: Rady, C.Anderson, Rebbeck
C: MacFarlane, Marker, Copping
HB: Johnston, Weston, Lihou
B: Voigt, Obst, W.Phillis
Ruck: Carey, Cornes, Hodgeman
Res: Kahl, Hercock, Pollard

Richmond:
F: Balme, Monteath, Stonehouse
HF: Clayton, Edwards, Mattson
C: Cumming, Thorpe, Tschirpig
HB: McGhie, Bourke, Keane
B: Lamb, Jenkinson, Cloke
Ruck: Heard, Sheedy, Carter
Res: Thompson, Bond

I've also got the scorers from that match:

Glenelg: Rebbeck 4.0, McInerney 2.2, Caldwell 1.2, D.Phillis, Hercock, Copping, MacFarlane 1.0, Hodgeman, Cornes, Marker 0.1, Rushed 0.3.
Richmond: Monteath 3.1, Heard 2.0, Balme 1.1, Thorpe, Edwards, Cumming 1.0, Tschirpig, Miller 0.1, Rushed 0.4.

David Miller must have been a late inclusion to the Richmond side.

The other Richmond players who may not be readily identified by surname are:

Don Mattson
Bruce Tschirpig - who I think I read he was a Sturt junior player
Ken Stonehouse
Robert Lamb
Noel Jenkinson
Murray Thompson

McAlmanac, with the scanned 1976 Budget, does it mention the field umpire(s) for the game - I have a gap in this field for that game?
