WD Elements 160gb HD?

Yesterday I got a Western Digital Elements 160gb Portable HD. I haven't set it up or anything yet and having never bought an external hard drive before I was just wondering if any of the more computer savvy pepole on here know much about Western Digital or things I should watch out for with hard drives in general?

I've put weeks of research into it in the hope of buying something that this laptop can handle and does the job. I read about how Windows can limit power to your USB ports when not being used so turned off that USB hub power management thing that allows Windows to do that and also registered the product online with WD in case something goes pear shaped. I have read that the Elements line is WD's "no frills" line but supposedly it's a pretty good brand and a 160gb HD for $69 I think is a pretty good price.

I got a 320gb Western Digital External Hard Drive about 6 months ago and couldn't be happier. Its one of the better brands and comes with a good warantee compared to others such as the Maxtor.
Mine hasn't missed a beat and is incredibly fast, I think you've done your research well and have a winner my friend.

Has anyone else had problems with the WD Backup software? I've installed it, and can set which folders I want backed up etc, but when I go to run it, the program crashes.

Must admit I can't help you there as I never use the software that comes with my hardware.

Normally I don't either, but I usually give it a go first. Have since found Karen's Replicator does the job well enough.

Just out of curiosity how come you never use the software that comes with a HD? Is there certain software for say hard drive's that are more popular than others?

I don't understand any of this as you can see but not sure why you would get a Western Digital HD if you don't like their setup?

For me, I find that often the bundled software is bloated and full of options and features I'll never use. Alternatively, sometimes the software is too limited in what it can do and doesn't have a feature I might want or need. Either way, they're often not the best software available for my needs which is why I don't use them.

Comodo Backup is free and effective.

Ditto and if it was really god software they wouldnt be giving it away.
I dont buy hardware for the software it comes with I only buy hardware because its the best or best value for the job I have for it.
