How they can still let that Cleric (Bashir) go free is insane.
He's the real problem, continuing to advocate more extremism.

Apparently the federal government is going to push for a moritorium on the death penalty.

I'm confused, why wait until after these executions. Are they saying it's alright to execute the Bali bombers but from now on we don't want anyone killed?

I think it's sad whenever anyone is killed.

Finally, should've been done as soon as they were found.

yes- but the original 88 dead in Bali had no chance to say goodbye to loved ones.
The Bali bombers should also have been denied that right (as well as losing all rights)

An eye for an eye eh Punk?

I just don't see the point in revenge. I know you are all going to say it will make the families feel better, but what if some families don't wan't them shot? Are their views to be taken into account too? I would think it was a rather empty satisfaction killing someone in revenge.

HOF, if the death penalty is going to have any credibility at all it needs an extensive appeals process.

yes, as in "an eye for an eye".
This was murder- pre-meditated I believe is the difference between Murder & Manslaughter.

I believe in some of the punishments other coutries have- Singapore use a cane on vandals, Saudi Arabia cut off a hand etc...
Australian courts are often too interested in the rights of the accused- something the accused don't give their victims.

Let's propose-

Cane
Vandalism/Graffiti
Theft Minor (break & enter)
Assault Minor

Limb Removel
Theft Major (stealing cars/handling stolen cars, home invasions, carjacking etc)
Assault Major (syringe/kife/sword/gun or any weapon (baseball bat/iron bar etc) used in attack/robbery)
Peadeophilia (guess which limb...)

This is not a conclusive list, but a reflection of what society might think more appropriate.
Those who are in positions of trust should serve double the penalty (ie Teacher sexually abuses students- whether the perpetrator is male or female..., Police Officer working a little "too closely" with crooks etc)

Plus the stupidity of the system that allows mentally disturbed crims back into the community only to commit further serious crimes.

Hooray. I agree. The Indonesian law has the death penalty. Do the crime do the time. No sympathy to those mongrels at all. Rot in hell.

Brian Deegan spoke out against the death penalty today, very courageous.

How is chopping off an arm fair punishment for stealing a car? It's funny that you all think certain crimes are abhorrent but are willing to support them if they are state sanctioned.

Go have a look at a jail then tell me that the punishment isn't severe.

Im not a fan of the death penalty, but its hard to argue against it for crimes like these or mass murders

TBS- I'd rather visit the victims & see how they're coping.

the jail is only severe punishment for those who are not "criminals".
Part of the system is full of people who see jail as a minor inconvenience, but for others, it ruins them.

1) John Smith grows up a "troubled child", in & out of boy's homes, runs with the wrong people. Gets to jail, & catches up with a few mates, they look out for each other.
2) Joe Smith grows up a decent person, makes a mistake one night out, & recieves a jail term. He gets inside, doesn't know the sytem/rules, upsets another inmate, & gets stabbed. The reason for his stabbing is that he used another prisoners cup by misteak- an offence that wouldn't get the same response on the outside.

Also, add that with jail as the currrent deterrent, why are violent crimes increasing?
Why is the fear of jail not deterring these people?
Is it because they know that if they commit 30 crimes, they might only get caught for 3, charged for 1?
Or is it because jail is the only place they can "kick a goal", & they also don't have to worry about mundane things like where they're next meal is coming from/paying the rent/keeping a job etc.

So many questions, & so few answers- I certainly don't pretend to have them.

First, who says violent crimes are increasing?

Second, jail works just as well as any other deterrent. Capital punishment has actually been shown to have a brutalising effect, increasing murder rates.

If jail is so easy for people, how many prisoners do you see trying to stay when they are released. Do they have to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the place?

John Smith goes to jail, is locked in a cell for 15 hours a day. Doesn't get to do much in the other 9 hours. Generally doesn't have a great time.
