no we don't

In Maths we are learning crap like, if you swing a golf club back 90 degrees as you hit the ball, how far does the ball travel and at what angle? so we have to do a sum like xytr + aqyjt - 90 etc(and this sum goes on for ages!)...... When am I going to go to a Golf Course and do that? its ridiculous and thats what we learn for most of the year, stupid sums that have no meaning to life!

In English we are writing poems! WTF! when am i going to be a fricken poet!

In Science we are figuring out if America did or didn't land on the moon, I couldn't give a stuff who landed on the moon 50 years ago!

In Media we just sit there and watch TV and movies most lessons (i ain't complaining) but we aren't learning anything there!

In PE we are currently playing Golf, and are going to the Driving Range Friday, maybe i should use my Maths work to help me with my game.

And to add to all this, no one actually does this work properly, we just sit there most lessons and listen to the teachers dribbling sh1t. They have no idea.......

Just imagine what life is like for those who cant read or write and I think your approach to your education may change.

If you HOF,were to ask all users in this forum " Are you satisfied with the amount of time and energy you put into your secondary education?" I think you will find, with hindsight, many would say no.

I know for one if I had my time again I would have left secondary school with a much better result.

Is it time to bring back Technical Schools and practical courses for some HOF?

But really those courses are aimed at trying to teach you skills you could apply to other aspects of life and those you could entertain yourself with.
They are not only about the silly [somestimes] examples they use in the examples.

The math would be applicable to engineering and ballistics for example, language skills are useful if you ever need to live somewhere where you need to learn another, but in the science what they ought to have you doing is plotting the course around the gravity wells, not debating whether it happened. It was real, and the Indians just launched a moon expedition. The US and Russia are now getting interested again, for the Helium3 fusion fuel available there but not on Earth - which could be important to our future survival.

I wondered about the value of Latin when I was at school, but 30 years on I can still use it to get the gist of written French, Italian, and Spanish, and it taught me a lot about the basic structure of English and those other languages.

Booney is right about, " Are you satisfied with the amount of time and energy you put into your secondary education?"
Unless you inherit money you are going to need skills to earn it.

Agreed Booney, if only I knew then what I knew now, I'd certainly have put more effort into my years 11-12 than what I actually did.

HOF you bitch about the teachers but teachers actually care about how you go.

Wait until you get out and do an apprenticeship, get a boss or go to Uni then it is up to you. I bet in ten years time you say if only I had paid more attention in school....

As the famous bard once said: The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool (English studies and poetry do come in handy)

School isn't just about learning facts and remembering them, you are teaching yourself how to learn. You'll go through similar thought processes when you try to learn stuff you will find useful later in life. Maths is also vital for many jobs.

Very, very, true Booney.
We cruise/party through year 12 and then when we get into the workforce it's a bit  'Welcome to the real world'
Longer hours, a boss who is the same as or worse than that teacher you didn't like etc, etc

Had this conversation with my son when he was in year 12

Sorry HOF. I know this is a "things that give you the sh1ts" tread, but I thought you came accross as a pretty sensible kid (it that is what you are).

But this post is pure ignorance imo. If it wasn't for nasa projects 50 years ago, you wouldn't have a computer to type on and you wouldn't have the www to post on this forum.

Did you know that the mobile phone that is no doubt glued to your ear uses signals beamed to a satellite. that satellite is only there because of the space race that lead to the 1st man on the moon.

I understand all of those points made, school is the best part of our lives, once I leave school and enter the "real world" and start working, i will soon realise how vital it was, but in saying that, school has changed a bit since you guys went and it also depends on which school you go to, what type of person you are and how "well" you actually want to do.

I go to a very sh1t school, no money and public school (nothing wrong with that) and the standard is pretty low, alot of students fail and do not do much at all, and that sets the tone for everyone. I am in between, i am no where the best student, but i am average. No one really wants to learn, so this makes it hard for the teachers, and they find it hard to teach. Alot of students just go with the flow, just cruise through and do not worry about learning.

I had the choice to go to a private, "higher class school", but i chose to go to this one because of obviously my mates, im not the smartest going around(im not dumb though  ) and it just isn't me, i couldn't see myself at a private school. At the end of the day, I know i will make it through school and get a decent job but i just find that alot of teachers take things way out of context, overcomplicate things, when they could be straight to the point and teach things we actually need!!

By the way, i am taking all of your posts on board, i know us teenagers think we know everything  and are pains in the arses, but at the end of the day we are only learning, one day i bet i will be telling kids exactly what you guys are telling me!

Two and a half weeks a bit long for you mate?

Dont worry, we are going on strike tomorrow morning. Im sure you need the rest.

At our school we have the teachers striking tomorrow and a student free day on Friday.

Same for my school, so most kids have a 4 day weekend, whilst I have to go to school tomorrow and do my first exam for Year 12.
