That's very optimistic to think we could win it that way.

how else then? :?

what Im saying if its a batters paradise then chasing on the last day would be what you would be wanting to do?

Someones got some $$ on the Vics me thinks

I have and still very confident SA will be all out for under 300, but was thinking today declare short of the target and put the ball back in the vics court and see if they might cough up a getable target on a road....

our kids need to learn you play Shield cricket for 6 points not 2

FWIW I do agree with you, on one hand teach them the way winners think, but I guess on the other hand perhaps an honourable draw and building some form could be the first priority.

but when your opponent makes 450 plus in the first dig the best you can hope for is batting the game out and snatching first innings points.

have to agree with the Rooster here, plus it wouldnt hurt our batsmen spending time in the middle getting into some form.

i say bat for first innings points and declare with a session left on day 4

Agreed our aim should be to bat the rest of the match.... we need our batsmen to spend as much time in the middle and give them some confidence that they can bat for time and make large totals

Dutchy, you don't drink champagne on a beer budget mate!!

All winter we've talked about how bad we are going to be, we are playing the shield favourites and our bowlers have been clobbered. To come out of this match with 2 points and them none would be a great result IMHO, which is still a fair way off too...

Fair dinkum, if they have the same attitude as the posters here we wont be winning a Shield for decades

I can see it all now, we make 500 get the 2 points and it will be back slapping and beer drinking celebrations tomorrow night

FFS we are in a serious competition, what better way to develop our players than put them in a pressure cooker situation and see the real players develop, chasing 2 points and being satisfied with that will prove ziltch....

Hawthorn would have never won this years premiership if they were happy to defend defend defend and finish in the top 8....

Its not a matter of defending its a matter of taking somethig out of the game..... cutting our innings short(hopefully) can give players less much needed time in the middle. we get 2 points to start the year off against possibly the best team....

Or we could get less practise in the middle and loose sit on the bottom of the table and have accomplished nothing. Yet again.

IM all for not giving in etc but by going for first innings gives the guys confidence they can chase large scores and there is hope that we can jag a few games this year.

And how long did Hawthorn take to win the flag after they were crap? Walk before run my boy. WA would struggle to win chasing a first innings lead of 463 let alone our young brigade. We would only be handing the Vics six points by trying to win the game after the way we bowled.

Id still rather be chasing 300 to win 6 points tomorrow than chasing 150 for 2?

Confidence would be sky high if we bagged the 6....thats the experience our guys need....while they are getting good time in the middle at the moment, is it real pressure chasing 2 points? I think not

I guess your expectations for 08/09 are a lot higher than mine. I'd rather see Plant, Fergs etc get time in the middle, make a slow hundred (not that Ferg will do that) to ensure their spot for a few games to release that pressure and hopefully progress from there.

I understand where you are coming from Dutchy though and there are positives and negatives for both scenarios

There is always pressure on these young lads as their ability has been questioned .... if they know that they can chase down 450+ with plenty of pressure(fear of failure) on them and then there is confidence to gain.

SA 2/134

WCP's mate Tom Plant just out infront of a McKay delivery for 48.

A 192 ball 48, gritty innings - is it enough to keep him in and keep out Cosgrove/Kahn/Christian?

Still 339 behind.
Declaration and 6 points would be the furtherest thing from Manous mind atm.
Avoiding the Follow on would be the 1st target and then it would be up to the Vics to decide what to do.

You don't think D Harris and C Borgas would have more to worry about? Score page hasn't updated yet but it shows 3/139 on the main page so I think CB is gone for 1.

A gritty opener who can stick around is what we need. He'll score faster as his confidence grows....

Well our spinning stocks are looking stronger and stronger by the day. Cullen Bailey has returned the excellent figures of 5 overs 0 maidens 1 wicket for 54 runs in the Second XI vs NSW

As WCP has posted Im not exactly a Tom Plant fan [YET]
However Im absolutely thrilled that he has made nearly 50 in his comeback game
One thing he is good for, valueing his wicket and thats what SA needs
Im sure if Tom continues to make scores of this magnitude the team WILL benefit
Just remember the opener who batted b4 him the last 3 years....
