D. Hookes also played underage football with West Torrens before playing cricket on a more full time basis.

Hookesy live around the corner from Thebby and for those that have read the book on David Hookes a tree came to a rather unfortunate end so Hookesy could watch the footy from the Cricket Club

He was part of the 1973 Thirds Premiership team who defeated Glenelg.

That's what they say. but I'm not sure the Hook actually played in the game. He was listed in the budget. He was already playing A grade cricket at that time.

That would be interesting to find out either way; being listed in the Budget does mean there is no certainty he didn't.

i have a feeling i've read somewhere that in the late 1800's that it was used as a racecourse & something tells me an adelaide cup may have been run there (at least that's what the memory thinks i've read)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I was always under the impression that he played full back in that team, but I am about 90% certain Hookesy said on radio once that he didn't play. Trouble is, with his off beat sense of humour you couldn't take a lot of what he ever said as gospel. Surely the Eagles would have records of their underage premiership teams Spelly? I'll leave you to sort that one out :)

I 95% sure that it is correct Hookesy didn't play the GF. but he played every other game during the season and was dropped. Refer to the book written after his death. Think he gave up footy after that to concentrate on Cricket

Just to clarify an earlier post -

Port natives never were West Torrens - They were a junior club in the Port Adelaide local football league

The Natives were formed in their own right and changed their names to West Torrens. The Port natives never changed their name

I remember seeing a couple of infamous games at thebby when I was very young.
I remember Bill Barratts infamous torpedo punt that was 75m on a wet day.

I recall a West V Torrens match when West Captain Bob Loveday called for a count halway through the last quarter. Torrens player Norm Dare jumped the fence and quickly donned a supporters overcoat.

South playing torrens probably late '70's WT's Spoofy Faletic belted Souths minute Gary Bracegirdle. Faletics' jaw was broken shortly after by Souths' Peter Hines who was playing with a plaster cast on his arm which was useful in this incident.

In 1968 KG Cunningham reported Souths Peter Darley after he had a scuffle with torrens Fred Bills. KG alledged that Darley called him a" F----- Cheat" , Darley was suspended and was therefore ineligble for the magarey in which he was eventually tied with Barrie Robran. KG thought the abuse was directed at him but Darley apparently directed the abuse at Bills when he called Bills a "F---- C--t."

How about the incident, Round 3 1966, West Torrens v South Adelaide at Thebarton Oval? Test paceman Neil Hawke gets involved in an incident with Neil Kerley, does his shoulder, ends his footy career and stuffs up his Test career. I was just a kid but I recall the incident as if it were yesterday.

I'm exactly half way through Hawke's autobiography "Bowled Over". He's on the 65 tour of the West Indies at the moment, so I'll get to that bit soon! :)

The Darley game was at Adelaide Oval and the umpire wasn't KG. I think that the umpire may have been Bob Hall.

I think you are right there. This story is related often, and people often credit KG as the umpire who cost Darley his medal. I've heard KG mention an incident where he regretted reporting a player for talking back to him. I think the player may have been Lindsay Head, but I'm happy to be corrected.

I reckon you're right. The story I heard was something like Freeman said "You're a peanut" and KG said "Right. You're reported". Some opposition players (South?) heard this and clapped so it was too late to withdraw the report.
Freeman got a match and the two (and their families) didn't speak for years, and prior to that they had been very close.

That would have been interesting as they were Sheffield Shield teammates for many years.

Same here Phil, remember Thebby as a Spartans cheerleader then moving onto the Pines. Finished up with the Spartans as a trainer. haven't done the gridiron thing for a couple years now. Bloody primadonnas.

Thebby now the home of the SAAFL
...

Cheers footy chick
- you wern't part of the Spartan Cheerleading squad that in 1989 won the Presidents Award as the "most valuable player" by any chance
- suffice to say after then a different group selected the league MVP
