How much experience did Roy Laird have back in 2003?

I think I saw on Centrals site Laird was assistant coach in 2000, reserves coach 2001 and 2002 and being groomed for the League team. Admittedly 2003 almost fell into his lap when Clarkson left, but I thought I heard there was some disagreement between Clarkson and the Board over changes he wanted to make. This might indicate the Board has set a certain broad framework and wants the coach to work within that. This would sit well with all the talk of Centrals deciding in the 90's to change the culture of the team and club. The "framework" probably suits Roy as the Dogs are playing the same way Laird did. Maybe not the most skillful, but determined and hard at the ball all day.

Having said that Laird is doing a sensational job and could be there for a long time to come. He doesn't seem interested in going anywhere. The 'framework' may be there but he still has to be a great coach to kept instilling it into the players, selecting new players to suit, getting them working together to the common goal for so long and coaching against the other eight teams.

Having a relatively inexperienced coach didn't do Sturt much harm although I'm not sure exactly how long Macgowan filled what roles at North. What other coaching roles has Mickan had ? Actually (and I may well be wrong) but I don't think any of the existing coaches had a lot of experience before joining their respective clubs. Ginever for example i think only had one year under Cahill.

Although I don't NECESSARILY agree with the choice of Healy I think it is commendable that NAFC have:
1 - had the courage to try an unproven coach
2 - for the 1st time since Nunan in 1981 have gone away from the Oatey/Nunan style
3 - have tried to adopt the style of the most successful SANFL club in the past decade
4 - have gone with a development coach
5 - have gone with a coach with a Port connection for the 1st time since Geof Motley
6 - have not gone with a Victorian coach (thank goodness!)
7 - for only the 2nd time since 1970 (Pattersons appointment) they have gone with a previously non-North Adelaide person (McDermott was the other)
8 - as a a five-times premiership player with the Dogs as well as a premiership captain 4 times he is the most premiership-decorated person to be appointed North coach since Geof Motley (9 premierships)
9 - at 34 years old maybe the 2nd youngest North coach in 50 years apart from Darel Hart in 1993 (29 yo).
10 - Healy was also assistant coach to Darel Hart for this year's 2008 victorious SANFL state team
PS Healy won the 1999 Gardiner Medal for the fairest and best in the AFL reserves competition
PPS Healy was taken 6th in the 1995 AFL Draft by St Kilda behind 1 - Clive Waterhouse Fremantle 2 - Matthew Primus Fitzroy 3 - Brendon Fewster West Coast 4 - Scott Bamford Fitzroy 5 - Brendan Krummel Hawthorn

Norwood board take note.

It was the Victorian (Patterson) that took North to 2 flags and a COA after Motley was coach.

But I do agree though, I think someone coaching an SANFL side would ideally have some sort of SANFL background

Probably not, considering he waqsn't officially "involved" with Centrals this year...

Maybe current reserves runner and league assistant coach Justin Casserly might have an interest in going back to the Roosters where he spent a lot of time...

I'm not a Roosters fan but I think this will be a great appointment for the club. Healy has a brilliant football brain and is a very good teacher (he used to be one). Still has a a number of very good contacts at Elizabeth, Port and also St. Kilda. I believe he is good mates with all the Wakelin brothers.

A couple that come to mind

Don Lindner 28 at the start of 1963
Barrie Robran 30 at the start of 1978

Congrats on the early call by the way Magarey Legend!
A good choice by the club I think.
