good call, if Adelaide was in the US it would be the 10th most populated city in the USA!

Detriot, San Fransisco, Inidanapolis have less than Adelaide.

In fact Washington, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Portland, Washington, Seattle, Cleveland, Miami have less than half of Adelaides population

that gives a bit of perspective regarding the "big country town"

Yes, perspective!
Adelaide would be about on par with the official population of Fukuoka as well. That doesn't take into account the 3 or 4 million that live just beyind the city's limits and commute there almost everyday.
Kyoto has less than Adelaide, but jump on a train and you'll be in Osaka in about 20 minutes where about 2 million live, which doesn't include the many millions that live just beyond that city's boundaries.
A few of those cities you mention in the U.S are down the west coast and not so far from one another, or are great holiday destinations and people are natually attracted to them. People get used to diversification more easily if they are exposed to it more.
Adelaide has about a million, but it is its lack of interaction with any other sizable population base that creates a different feel IMO.
Oh, and the people tend to stare.

I've visited there a fair bit and enjoy it.

A couple of gripes in general, though.

I get annoyed about Adelaide being called a big country town. It's fashionable to say it, but it's just nonsense. I've travelled a fair bit and if a city of over a million that covers a huge area is a large country town, then there are a lot of well known cities in the world that are large country towns.

Finally, as much as I like Melbourne, to say it's the 2nd best city in the world is pretty doubtful. I think Rio, Istanbul, Sydney, Paris and several others might have some claims.

Isn't that more talking about the lifestyle and pace of the city?

I asked a mate of mine about what he meant by it and he said "it's just so relaxed, there isn't the hustle and bustle of Sydney".

So anytime anyone says that it's a big country town, I take it that they mean the lifestyle and pace are much more relaxed.

My current boss is English born and has been here 6 years ( the first 4 living in Melbourne) he thinks it is an insult to call Adelaide a small country town as we have many world renowned events* and over seas we are just as commonly spoken about as much as Sydney and Melbourne are.Quite often in a much better light too.

*Fringe Festival,Arts,Tour Down Under,Clipsal 500,Grand Prix (when we had it),Wines,Coppers beers*

Booney, I think the fact that your boss came to Australia meant he was previously moving in a circle that had knowledge of the place. In my experience, people who have heard of the place name "Adelaide" are about one in every 50.
Poms are more likely to have heard of it, but Americans, Canadians and Japanese usually look very blank when I say where I am from, yet they know the words Sydney, and Melbourne very well and Japanese especially know of Cairns.
Conversations with people who have been to Australia are even more depressing. It seems 100% go to somewhere on the east coast, about 20% will skip over to Perth after their East coast tour, about 5% will come to Adelaide.
Not trying to put Adelaide down, I love it, I think it is very clean, which places it very high in my opinion of a good city, it is also very relaxing, has just about everything someone would need to fulfill a pleasant life without getting too extravagant and has a lot of beauty. But there are some things that Adelaide definitely is not.
