Michael Vaughan is set to spend up to six weeks playing in Australia in a last, desperate attempt to prove he has a future in Test cricket.
England took the unprecedented step yesterday of announcing that Vaughan will not be included in the 15-man squad for the two-Test tour to India in December, to be announced tomorrow, even though their former captain was awarded a new central contract worth in excess of £200,000 just two weeks ago.In an extraordinary move by the Lord's spin department, the ECB responded to increasing speculation that Vaughan had decided to take two months off to 'clear his head' and 'rekindle his love of cricket' before attempting to win back his place by issuing a statement giving a rather different version of events.
In the statement, national selector Geoff Miller was quoted as saying: 'Michael has not been selected for the tour of India because his place in the Test squad cannot be justified, based on recent form. Our view is that it will be to England's benefit if he takes a break from international cricket in the period leading up to Christmas and spends time working on his game.
'We have discussed the situation with Michael. He fully understands the reasons for the selectors' decision and has made clear to us that he is fully committed to winning back his place in the England Test side. Noplace in Indiafor former skipper Like all centrally contracted players, Michael will be given a clear programme over the next six months which will include training and match practice over the winter period.
'With a busy period of international cricket on the horizon, we would like to stress that he remains very much part of our plans over the coming year.'
Ashes winner Vaughan quit the England captaincy in emotional scenes the day after England lost the Test series to South Africa. He made himself unavailable for the the final Test at The Oval, in which new captain Kevin Pietersen led the side to victory, and vowed to rediscover his batting form in the Championship with Yorkshire.
Pietersen vigorously backed Vaughan's case for a central contract, even though some within the selection panel remained unconvinced. But after he pulled out of Yorkshire's final Championship match with injury, rumours began circulating that the 34-year-old was considering quitting the game altogether, with lucrative newspaper column and TV offers under consideration.
Sources close to Vaughan insist he still harbours hopes of returning to the Test side during the tour to West Indies starting in January, and he has often said in the past that he would like to carry on as a player well after his captaincy was over.
I understand that, while he will now take an extended break, he is keen to prove his fitness and motivation by playing club cricket in Australia later this year.
Vaughan's close ties with the former Australia star Darren Lehmann, forged during their days together at Yorkshire, make South Australia the most likely base for him to play five or six weeks in Aussie conditions.
Meanwhile, Steve Harmison insists he will be fully fit for the Stanford Twenty20 series in Antigua next month, despite the broken wrist he sustained while fielding on the third evening of Durham's Championship decider against Kent.
He said: 'I've been told the wrist will be in a cast for a couple of weeks so I'll have no worries for the Stanford match. If I have to catch one left-handed to win the money, I'll just have to go for it.'

As understand it, Vaughan would only be playing grade cricket over here, not too sure if he'd be even suit up in the red?
