Zipzap I suspect I’m the guy you refer to with the cooler bag (standing on the hill just under the big screen).

What you neglected to tell listeners was that the 6 cans in question were Carlton mid-strength and all were consumed in moderation between my mate & I over the course of the afternoon. Yes smuggled into the ground at the cost of $1 per can versus the $ 4.50 odd charged over the bar for a plastic cup of beer ! A family mans way of trying to save a few dollars. If that’s such a big crime, then I’ m guilty as charged.

Awwww, you make breaking the law sound so honourable. So noble, doing it for your family and all
Mate, read my quote again...carefully. I wasn't insinuating your actions had anything to do with bad crowd behaviour. In fact I believe I said it would be unfair to just single out Centrals supporters on this issue. But after 3 weeks of watching the footy in the midst of Dogs fans, I made a personal observation - and I know that is a big word for Mr Grumpy Guts - in a thread that had already mentioned alcohol at the footy, that this seems to be either a common practice or just amazing luck that I happen to be stood next to grog smugglers like your good self three games in a row. Any conclusion jumped to thereafter is purely of your own doing.

Sadly for you that opportunity never arose. Your abuse of Gowans for tackling the pitch invader clearly demonstrated your hatred of anything Red, White & Blue.

Well, you are right and you are wrong. When I was there my Bays mate was admittedly a bit tired and emotional and I'm sure he was probably giving a bit of good-natured lip (not about to defend him or apologise on his behalf) but I was sitting with my Dad in the safety of the Chappell stand for the second half of the game and so was sadly not there to share the Gowans incident (or any other unsavoury banter) with you. For the record though I think Gowans' actions were totally stupid (albeit highly amusing) and could have landed him in hot water a-la Andrew Symonds. Surely you're not now extolling the virtues of assault?

your wrong on one point stampy the 'flare issue' is at least 3 weeks in a row as it happened at the last minor round game as well

as much as it would slow up queues could security (i use the term security loosely) check all people going through the gates for things like flares & any other objects deemed unsuitable......when someone gets hurt then something will be done as per usual

At the risk of sounding out of place - are the flares really a problem? I think it adds a bit of colour; is a signal from the Dogs fans that they are claiming victory, not unlike JB rousing the Snouts into a rendition of "A Tiger For Me" when the game is won. Thus far nobody has lost an eye, so all is well...

I think it's poor form for anyone to jump on here and criticise this teams fans or that teams fans. Most of us are supporters of our clubs from way back, we're SANFL supporters, not AFL supporters and as such, we've been to many games where the banter has been good and many games where the banter has been out of order.

People used to criticise the Port Adelaide Cheer Squad, but for years I always found them to be good sports and always remember one of their great cheers in the 1990's...

How do you spell wooden spoon? S T U R T!

At the same time I've been to games where supporters from West Torrens and Central Districts and probably others (never met a nasty South supporter I have to say) have been complete and total tossers.

Its the nature of the game. My own club, Sturt, is, unfortunately, also supported by people who've obviously only recently come down from the trees and as a result, act in the most appalling manner on probably a weekly basis.

I think we're all old enough to realise that every club has wankers, no one has a monopoly on it and no doubt this week there'll be wankers from Sturt and Glenelg at the game and wankers from Centrals the following week.

It's sad we have to put up with it...

... but lets do the right thing and not cast a veil of suspicion on everyone wearing different colours to our own.

Most supporters will shake your hand if you say well done, good luck to you next week and all that.

Further more to that, I think the worst of the worst just seem to use their time at the footy not just to support their team but to use it as an excuse to let off steam so they can feel a bit better about their shitty week day lives.

Some of the rubbish that emanates from peoples mouths at the footy just wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else. Not that I'd want the game taken over by tweed jacket wearing supporters who golf clap when their team kick a goal, but imagine if you took the kids down the local shops and half the people there were screaming abuse at you. It just wouldn't be on.

Someone on this site once said that if you don't like it, then harden up. But basically you're telling young kids to harden up and I can understand families not being drawn to that environment. It's a shame as we have a fantastic comp to support and it could be even bigger than it is, if it wasn't for the brain dead muppets that seem to be attracted to the game as well as the die hard supporters.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Well "mate", why even bother to mention it if you weren't trying to insinuate some connection with bad crowd behaviour. As for your comment about being "noble & doing it for the family", wrong again. Just trying to save a few bucks and make ends meet. Something you probably wouldn't appreciate.

In future why not just concentrate on the core issue. i.e the people who get magotted at the games who behave like idiots that aren't getting tapped on the shoulder by Weslo. You wont get any arguement from me on that front. Bringing BYO to avoiding getting ripped off isn't the source of that issue.

Your support for your mates position on the Gowans incident doesn't surprise me. Wouldn't matter what either of the twins did they'd still cop sh.t from you guys. Any other player & it would be laughed off & the offender labelled a dipstick. Envy/jealousy is one thing, hatred is another.

Um, it's a thread about boozing at the footy and people who break the law by smuggling dangerous items into a sports arena. Entirely appropriate I bring it up, sorry if it made you uncomfortable.

dogbreath wrote:As for your comment about being "noble & doing it for the family", wrong again. Just trying to save a few bucks and make ends meet. Something you probably wouldn't appreciate.

Totally appreciate it. Wouldn't stand up in court though I'm afraid.

(Your piss-weak attempt at stereotyping is woefully ironic given that's what you accused me of)

Totally agree with your first point but are you seriously suggesting people bringing their own alcohol doesn't contribute to the problems you mention? Not everyone is as 'sensible' as yourself.

I'm not supporting my mates' actions at all as I wasn't there to even hear what they said. Thinking what Gowans did was stupid (jumping a drunken yob from behind who was posing no risk to anyone but his own credibility) has nothing to do with hatred, just common sense. I did laugh it off and think he was a dipstick. But after the laughter died down I wonder if Gowans himself might have regretted his spur of the moment heroic deed? Wouldn't be the first time.

I know this doesn't come from a legal sense or anything, but I think what the Gowans boy did was perfectly justified and good on him ... Whilst the drunken yob didn't appear to be posing any risk, he most CERTAINLY posed no risk laying on the ground with Gowans over him.

Being a Norwood fan that had little to cheer about, that was one of my highlights of the day.

At first ,I actually thought the guy that was chasing the female was trying to stop her .
He probably got what he deserved, but as ZZ stated, it left James Gowans open to an assault charge, & what if the guy had a weapon of some sort. Best leave these drunken idiots to the people who are there to deal with them.
I am sure , later on, the thought went through J Gowans mind that this idiot may sue him, even if that is morally wrong.

1. The tool did try and have another crack at Gowans. I don't know whether you call that bravery or stupidity - maybe bravely stupid.

2. The tool also broke free from a Wereslow. In the end I think the cops had better success bundling him over the fence.

If he takes the field with a weapon then all the more reason to put him on his ass before he can use it IMHO ... I don't see that Gowans or any player would be open to litigation as the offender is trespassing in the first place, and any player that sorts them out Im sure could easily use the "Feared for my safety/self defence routine".
