No player payments club

Postby Esteban Vihaio » Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:28 pm

How many clubs, say div 5 and above get by without paying a single player per game? Add a star next to those that only pay per win?

Initial guesses?
Universities
- Adelaide Uni
- Flinders University

Old cols
- SHOCS | ROCS | SIOC | Scotch| PAOC?

Others
- Mitcham, Adelaide Lutheran
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

I know for a fact that Pulteney OS do not pay a cent.

Adelaide Uni well we know they state publicly that they don't but who knows what goes on under that grandstand

Mitcham could fit into the same category

Once you get to D3 and up, clubs have to start paying something to be successful, and recruit players. A lot has been said about North Haven and Pooraka throwing cash at guys in D4 - most of which is exaggerated i think.

We dont have paid players as such, but all the A grade get an incentive (made up of cash and drink vouchers) when we win. And our top 10 in the B&F get a share in some cash incentives to at the season's end. Players are only eligible for this if they are paid-up members though.

Im sure other clubs do similiar.

In the end, its all up to the individual clubs as to what they do. We have made mistakes in the past with payments - you just need to learn from them. There is no right way or wrong way. If you can afford to pay, then do it. Many clubs cannot though.

ROC's pay players. 90% sure Scotch would, they also pay their top 10 players per game pretty handsomely.

Iggies may pay 1 or 2, SHOCs dont, SMOSH dont, SPOC do, Not sure on Pembroke

Scotch could, I have heard though their best player awards are upwards of $200 + each week.

I can. Is good mates with Hocking, was not having his best year as far as getting on field and just wanted to play football.

Salisbury do give incentives though.

Scotch did pay their best 10 a couple of years ago quite well. I assume it is the same now.

SMOSH pay and I reckon SHOCs do too.

O'Loughlin would of been on good cash at Virginia this year until Greg Phillips sacked him mid year for various reasons.

Now that we have a few clubs list, how do they stay competitive and more successful than their cash laden rivals?
- Social environment, ala that reported from the black
- Strong juniors refilling the ranks
- Positive club culture
- Good demographics; larger potential player population versus competing clubs
- Less internal player politics, partly due to playing for the love of the Guernsey

Ricky O wasn't paid a cent for playing at the Salisbury Footy Club. I'll state that categorically. He was selected in an Aboriginal All-Star squad to play in Melbourne and wanted to play footy to ensure he would make that trip, and the connection with Eddie got him to the club for 4 or 5 games. Hoping that he'll stay around next year as he got along well with the boys and seemed like he enjoyed himself.

We give money for top 3-4 Best Players each week, believe BOG in the A Grade was about $60 this year. Tried the $40 for the A Grade 21 each win 3-4 years ago and ran outta money by the end of the year, and we only won 5-6 games.

Not being able to recruit high-quality footballers due to the lack of money may mean we might not ever get higher than A3, but I know that the guys I play with now will still be at the club whether we're in A3 or A6. Loyalty is a big thing.

Social Environment: Top place to be. Boys have 6-7 big shows at the club during the year and weeks when we don't have a show, we all usually go out together anyway.

Strong Juniors: Have had strong juniors for 10+ years now. Fill all grades from U7s to U15s, as well as a 17s or 18s team.

Club Culture: Strong drinking culture as there is at most senior footy clubs, parents are very much involved with the junior sides and young guys tend to hang around after juniors and play senior footy, which is what we survive on. (11 footy trip virgins this year, 17 two years ago).

Demographic: Obviously a lot of other clubs in the north, some that pay, but the club relies heavily on the juniors. Some North Pines boys came over at the start of the year to play Cs and look like they'll be hanging around for a long time, loving the place.

Player Politics: Like I said, everyone is mates with everyone, some guys will always have issues with one or two others, but that's the same as every club I would imagine. Most boys are born and bred Salisbury and play for the jumper and their mates.

I'd day that besides maybe 4 or 5 clubs, virtually all other clubs in the SAAFL would pay at least a couple of players in their A grade sides. You are all knieve to believe otherwise.
Of course these players arent going to tell you that they are getting paid and it wouldn't be in their best interests to do so.
