I second that.

Some others...

Ray Huppatz's mark in the goalsquare against Norwood at Footy Park, 1983. Kicked a goal to win the match, too!

George Fiacchi's desperate lunge to rush a behind, stop a certain goal and save the match against Norwood at The Parade, 1988.

The sound-barrier breaking 'Magpies' chant that swept Footy Park after Port kicked the first goal in the last quarter of the 1994 Grand Final. Actually, the whole last quarter was exhilirating.

Tom Carr's match-saving spoil in the dying minutes of the 1999 Grand Final against Norwood.

LOL We posed a similar question on the Norwood Forum recently and %90 of supporters highlights were in games v the arch rivals, goes to show the place it holds.

As much as I delight at reminscing over the highlights on our Forum, I cringe at most of those above Macca  (except maybe the Huppatz mark, which at the time left me, as a youngster, speechless)

LOL!

Didn't even realise that until I re-read my post and saw 4/5 were Port v Norwood stoushes.

Funny thing is, since I only started going to the footy in the 80s, I considered Glenelg our fiercest rivals, which was probably true at the time and up until the mid-90s.

Likewise the Keith Thomas mark in the '84 GF.

So close and yet...

Finally winning through to a grand final.
That victory against Norwood will live on in my mind forever.

As, of course, will Central's first premiership win. I cried for the last 15 minutes - not believing it was finally happening.

Why? Port have had very little problems putting Glenelg away in the finals over the years. Norwood have actually won more than 50% of their finals against Port Adelaide, it's just that we struggle to get to Grand Finals!! :)

I think the rivalry between Port and Glenelg magnified greatly from the grand final in 77, through to the 81 grand final, the "Granger" incidents, that Final when Abernerthy hit the post (87?), then to the 2 grand finals in 88 and 90. Before the late 70's i would assume there wasn't much of a rivalry at all between the 2 clubs.

Port and Norwood's rivalry presumably would have been more steady over the last however many years (personally, not certain when it really commenced).

Probably about 1878 I suspect.

Norwood pretty much dominated the first 20 or so years, so the rivalry wasn't really in full swing until the 1904 Grand Final. At 3/4 time, Norwood were trailing 3-5 to 8-10, but piled on 6-3 to 0-0 in the final term to win by 2 points. Since that moment, the rivalry has carried on for the past 100 years.

Actually believe it or not I think it dates back to 1889. Norwood and Port finished "equal" top and thus played what was the first "grand final" to see who won the premiership. Reading newspaper reports of the time there seems to be a bit of "feeling" between the two clubs.
EDIT - Having read up on the 1904 season I'd say Adelaide hawk is on the money and that 1904 cemented the "friendship".

Yeah i presumed it dated back to the late 19th century, but then again, its funny how that rivalry took off but South never really had any lasting rivalries given their early successes.

3.5 + 6.3 = 9.8 = 62
8.10 = 58
62 - 58 = 4
4 =/= 2

Cornes' mark and goal after the siren at Norwood oval in 77

Also, I remember being at a West v Port match at Richmond in 83.
West down by 5 goals late in the last quarter and came back to snatch victory with some exciting footy.
I reckon it might have been Burgess that kicked the winner running from half back.

The first time I stepped on to Football Park - in the mini-league in the mid 80s. We played Norwood - Ardtornish Primary School.
It was a double header game and it poured with rain for most of the day.
I can't remember who played the other game - may have been Woodville v Torrens.

1986 Grand Final. Second quarter. Tony Hall marks a ball, having thrown himself in front of a leading Rooster. Fires up a handball to the lurking Peter Maynard before the crowd has time to applaud. Maxy spies Tony Symonds streaming goalwards and lobs the ball perfectly in front of him. Symo hardly broke stride, just took the ball out of the air as he streamed goalwards and slotted it through. A better passage of play I have never seen.

Amen to that.

And for me, add: Beating Port in the infamous 82 prelim, coming from 59 points down at three quarter time to beat Sturt in a night game in 87, beating Sturt in last year's elimination, and coming from behind to beat them kicking into the wind at the Bay a few weeks ago was big as well.

From a non-Glenelg point of view: the moment Neville Roberts nudges Anthony Williams under the ball in the final minutes of the 84 grand final, making sure Norwood become the first team to win the flag from fifth.

Haha!! .. yes, I recall that moment well. We had this group of very arrogant Port supporters behind us, all wearing their 1984 premiership t-shirts, and full of booze and bad manners. We had several run ins with them as the day progressed, and the moment Roberts booted that goal, we knew we had it. After celebrating, I turned to give them "what for" ... and they were gone!!! Hardly surprising, I had them down as the type who could dish it out but couldn't take it. Often wondered what happened to those t-shirts :)

That would have to be Round 13 1985.
