Well, I was a fan of the old system so we'll see how it goes. I have my doubts on just how much it will improve the state U18 champs situation but we'll find out in due course.

Will be fun being able to watch all 3 games. Will be a bloody long day though.

Yep, I'm the same. Nothing we can do about it now...we just have to get on with accepting it.

If a player is good enough and committed enough he will make it regardless of whatever underage system is in place

Porplyzia at the Crows is a great example

I am not close enough to the system to really comment much more than that but from what I have read on here and heard in the media it sounds like a good move.

In 10 years time we won't even think twice about I reckon .... but we'll see

What would be good would be if clubs who have the bye could have their league and reserves teams take the bye but have the u/18s team play that week. This would mean that there would need to be a different draw for u/18s but given there will be carnival commitments at different times anyway, this might be worth looking in to. I know I think I wouldn't mind going to an u/18s game if the league/reserves had the bye.

Great idea and good thinking! I hope the SANFL consider that, potentially you could get some bigger crowds than what will be at the league game this Saturday!

Geez there is some hysteria from many about this change to the underage structure - driven by some outspoken and to a degree ill thought out emotive comments from some clubs CEO's and Presidents.

Football is changing and evolving all the time, it was not that long ago in 1990 that there was hysteria around the fact that the SANFL was venturing into the AFL and that caused our comp as we knew it then to change but from then to now we have survived and realinged the model which has resulted in a thriving local comp.

I hardly think moving fom U'17's and 19's to U'16's and 18's is going to be the death of anything to be totally honest!

I will reserve my judgement, but I feel sory for the 100 or so kids and their families that will drop out of the SANFL environment and play against weaker opposition at local club level. My grandson is fine he will play 18's but our experience in victoria is that clubs have now lost control of their kids. Footy is changing yes, but what you don't realize is you have disturbed the underlying strength of the SANFL competition. You have done this for the wrong reasons. Money is the mother of all evil. This system rewards bottom clubs who have done nothing in regards to developing juniors. Why call it an under 18 comp if you can play under 19's - hypocritical. Can they place under 19's in the TAC - I don't think so !!!!

We are all entitled to our opinion Drebin, as are the CEO's and Presidents...

Some we agreewith, some we don't. That's just life isn't it. Like I say, I guess only time will tell with the success (or lack of ?) with the new system and despite not liking it personally, I will gie my full support to it as I have done our underage teams in the past.

Like I mentioned earlier, possibly seeing the Under18's on the same day as the league and reserves will be a bonus for me as my nephew plays in the 17's for Centrals and I haven't been able to catch any of his games but i should be able to next yera now.

Please point out where I said that people are not entitled to their opinion which I find rich coming from you as you have an opinion on just about everything on this site including taking others to task about their opinions! My real point was that CEO's and President's should be a little more "reserved" rather than hysterical but maybe some are just emotive and to quote a self proclaimed forum guru from another site - some are "peanuts"!

It's good to see someone in charge of a club be visibly passionate about something. I for one am grateful that my club has such a CEO - I know we are in good hands as long as that is the case.

Drebin, no where in my post did I elude to the fact that I thought you were wrong in saying people are not entitled to their opinion mate, relax, no need to get all personal now...

I did not take you to task about your opinion mate and I certainly don't about other posters as you mentioned. Just like everyone on here, I just express my point of view, whether it be right or wrong and that will of course sometimes conflict with other users. Mate, CEO's and President's wouldn't be any good in their job if they were "reserved" in their thoughts and opinions. I don't think there is much point carrying on any more about it now, a decision has been made and ALL clubs have to deal with it and move on.

At the end of the day, when such a big decision is made in terms of changing an integral part of our competition, you will get divide and anxt amongst fans, officials and outsiders. Like I say, let's just move on and see what the outcome is come season's end in 2009.

It is interesting that this decision has been made in a year that SA will have close to a dozen kids drafted.

I would be surprised if we get 8 next yeat, so they have made it hard for themselves to jusify the sucess of the first year on the number of players drafted.

If they go down this path they could always play a double header at Thebarton Oval every Saturday.

Gotta feel for the kids born in 1992, except for the out & out standouts they have had to perservere being second fiddle to the 17's in their SANFL club, now when they have a chance to play their correct age group the line gets moved & a 16's comp gets in.
I'd say the u17's club footy will be pretty strong next year.
Hey soccer you owe us 45million.

If those kids are strong enough and good enough, they'll play in the Under 18's...

The thing that I will find interesting is how many younger kids are now either going to be pushed away from football because there will be an influx of more talented kids coming back into the local comps or whether these local clubs take advantage of the stronger numbers and field more sides. Will be interesting times ahead, I hope good ones of course...

I don't think so Big Phil .... your nephew will be playing in the Mickey Mouse Under 16 Comp that will be made up of not many games. :?

I doubt whether anyone from the Under 16s will get the opportunity to play in the U18 Comp at all next year because:
A) They will not play enough U16 football to keep the spot light on them to justify getting picked in the U18 comp.
B) If they play an U16 then that means they will have to drop off an U17/18 of their list to make way for him.

Surely all clubs will keep U17/18's on their list as long as they can to see if they have the long term ability to make it beyond U18's.

I believe they are talking about a player list off 40 -45 Players in the U18 and that the U16 list will be totally separate.
