Most of us would have a definitive moment in a game where things just clicked and it looked sensational...real champagne footy...

i actually have two...

and they both feature the nonchalant casual bruce lennon.

(in order of when they occurred)

moment 1: 1997, Sturt vs Port at AO. Thredders kicks to Oleary on the HBF, takes the mark and plays on with a long kick toward the HFF members side...ben judd takes the mark and gives the handball off just in time to bruce lennon who looked like he couldnt kick over 30 m yet lets rip from outside 50 and it sails thru post high...i was behind the goals there and was going ecstatic...on the video it is captured perfectly with gary window SCREAMING "PLAY OF THE DAY, PLAY OF THE DAY, AWWW HE IS A REAL CHAMPION" hahaha...makes me chill thinking about it....

now the second one i rate just as highly...but any given day the other could win out....

moment 2: 1998 2nd semi final, Sturt vs West. Sturt had just piled on about 4 goals in 5 mins and were about to break wests back. The ball is won out of the centre by sturt...brodie atkinson unleashes a 30 m handball to Bruce Lennon who takes possession just inside the 50 and turns to face the goals at full throttle...ed richardson (i think) is bearing down on him from in front and Bruce, as casual as ever, does a beautiful 360 spin to avoid the tackle, straightens from 40 out and slots it thru...Bruce celebrates by raising both arms and screaming in delight....again i was right behind the goals and it was our 5th in 5 which basically guaranteed us out first GF berth in 15 years. Gives me greater chills just thinking about it :D...

Port went on to kick the next 13.

To cop that and the 89 grand final as a 7 and 8 yr old was hard to take and still haunts me. They are two of the most humiliating performances ive seen from North.

Ive been waiting ever since to play Port in another final and it hasnt happened yet.

Arguably 1960. People tend to forget that Port finished the minor round top after winning the previous 6 Flags in a row and looked set to make it 7 in a row.
We rolled them in the 2nd semi then Norwood rolled them in the prelim. Then Norwood and North fought one hell of a GF that saw North win by 5 points.

EDIT - Just to further this point and taking into account finals experience, it is interesting to note that coming up against the finals hardened Port Adelaide in the 2nd Semi-Final (having won the previous 6 flags) North Adelaide had 11 players who were playing in their very first final, and the rest of the final 20 had a total experience of 33 finals games between them.

1973? We only lost two games for the year and one game against North we won by over 17 goals I think...

Geoff Kingston in the 'Tiser wrote that Glenelg were the best team all year and deserved that flag....

After coming back from a broken neck and being allowed to sit on the bench in that last game so he could get his 200th and life membership (he was in no fit state to play), he came onto the ground in the last quarter and caught a Woodville player holding the ball in the goal square. Jumped up and down and shook his fists with joy before slotting through the goal. For that small moment all else was forgotten and I will never forget that piece of play.

1973? We only lost two games for the year and one game against North we won by over 17 goals I think...

They are talking about premierships that North nearly pinched.
For the record you lost one game all year (against North at Prospect) and the North team that you gave a shelllacking to at Glenelg was severely undermanned. Not that you didn't deserve the flag.

Without wishing to sound detrimental to Ian Hanna, That bit of prose proves why Glenelg can be considered to be a better club than West Torrens. Weak clubs rely on sentiment and individual achievements to create their history. Strong clubs look back on team performances in grand finals to determine theirs....

As I said in the Glenelg v West Torrens thread, four flags in the 20th Century dead even between those two clubs. Premierships are all that counts.

I was at a quiz night a week ago at a footy club in the Hills and Ian Hanna was there as a participant, one of the questions was how many games did Ian Hanna play for West Torrens, naturally he was the only one that got it right
I thought I did OK with a guess of 215

and his team won and knocked off our team by one point
