I agree with cd about Doug Thomas.

As good as some on the list were, they're not really in the top 10 of all time.

Maybe I only saw him at the end of his career, but I never rated Kuhlmann

The full back in Glenelg's 85 & 86 premiership teams was Chris Duthy.

I was going to to say Mr Cool.. Ross Gibbs, more probably later 80's though.. If Roger Delaney isn't in that list well I'll go hee. :?

Richard Champion? or was he CHB?

In recent times, Chris Threadgold is the best FB I've seen...

Duthy was very good, but perhaps wasn't in the SANFL long enough for anyone to notice, but I'm with many others, the best backline must have a Roger Delaney in there somewhere...

It's hard to leave out Ron Kneebone who was playing FB when he won the Magarey Medal....

Bah. I lost all respect for Threadgold after I witnessed him trying to rough up the teenager who was standing him - after the final siren as the kid was trying to leave the ground. In the same incident I gained a whole new respect for Phil Carman who saw what Thredgold was doing from the coaches dugout, and sprinted to the goalsquare to pull Thredgold away.

I disagree that Delaney would be in the top ten fullbacks of all time. However I do concede that he always - always - had a good match against my mob. Delaney might be the only bloke who would consistently towel John Fidge every time they met.

And Peter Hudson still rates Ron Kneebone as one of his thoughest opponents. When you consider some of the great full backs Hudson played on over the years, that's very high praise indeed.

Ross Gibbs was a back pocket player, not tall enough for a key position.

Old Woodville fans can correct me here, but my recollection of Richard Champion in the SANFL was as a CHB. I know he played most of his AFL footy at FB though.

Yep, I suppose this sort of discussion is divided amongst those people that have been around for longer than others...in my childhood watching the Bays vs. Port going at it in the big games, Delaney stood out more than any other defender I can recall...

I don't recall the Threadgold incident you're referring to, but we're talking about playing ability, not so much whether we respect them or not...in this light, I hated Delaney with a passion, but respected his ability to make Fidgey look inept.

Keith Kulhmann was good in the 80s. Trevor Sorrell for the magpies in the 70s was a great full back think he came from tassie.

Good call Trevor Sorrell forgot about him. North fans will remember Adrian Sutter and Ian Kroehn (Centrals/North)

Poor old Ian Kroehn. Was a top full back for Central and was correctly selected to play for SA against Victoria at Adelaide Oval in 1973. Unfortunately for Ian, he ran head first into a rampaging Alex Jesaulenko, possibly in the best form of his career. Jezza kicked 10 goals that day, and Kroehn's form deteriorated rapidly after that.

Sorrell came from the mid north in SA. He spent a couple of years in Tasmania in the mid 70's before returning to Port.

I think Brenton Bills was the best Full Back for West Torrens in my time.

Doug Cox was a good one also.

Steven Hall without doubt for WWT
