They wont be able to move with them. And since they wont have games to go to and watch the crime rate will incerase. Better for the state that they stay here ;)

Maybe, if they then got rid of the black and white, the coach, and didn't call themselves "Port" anything.....
Maybe, we could resurrect the old Norwood/Sturt SANFL merger offer in return for control of the AFL licence.

There would be no point whatsoever in letting the Sturt/Norwood merger in, they'd be too similar to the Crows.

Bump!!!!!...me think Mr Rucci has been reading here... :-k and people think I was trolling

Gold Coast Power is easy answer
MICHELANGELO RUCCI | August 11, 2008 12:30am

If the Port Adelaide Football Club were based in football-crowded Melbourne, what would be made of it? Let's consider the status of the Power, item by item.

AFL football is about finances. Port is said to be headed towards a massive operating loss this season - perhaps more than $500,000.

Club finances, even in an era of the AFL being underwritten by media deals, in particular from television, are still heavily reliant on membership and crowd figures. Port has arrested the slide on membership, but its attendances are falling - and, with an average of 24,410 this season, are at a record low.

This suggests membership will take a hit next year.

Attendances are ultimately driven by results - or at least the promise of results. The Power, after rising from 12th to second last year, has fallen to 14th with just five wins from 19 games.

There is nothing to inspire Power ticketholders - including 12,000 who passed up on their paid seats to the most recent Showdown - to go to AAMI Stadium. In fact, Port supporters are leading a silent but visible protest in absentia.

They hear their players, as directed by the exasperated marketing department, talk about playing "exciting" football. They then watch a team directed to play anything but exciting football.

On-field it is a disaster.

Off-field there is impending chaos.

There is no chief executive - and will not be until perhaps mid-October. The Titanic had its captain until it sank.

The president, Greg Boulton, is supposed to be moving aside to allow the succession plan for Brett Duncanson's rise. But there is faction emerging that believes Boulton must stay to control coach Mark Williams.

There is no media manager to co-ordinate the club's message which is increasingly uttered by Williams - but he holds no consistency nor comfort for Port supporters who are increasingly losing faith in the 11-year coach.

The coach - who hopefully has learned this year he alone cannot do everything - is on contract for next season. But his tenure is weakening while the prospect of his move to usher the Gold Coast into the AFL as its 17th team in 2011 appears to be increasing.

The marketing department - and some board members - have trouble knowing their club's identity. Sometimes it is Port Adelaide. Sometimes it is not. It all depends on the agenda, which is never the same day by day at Alberton.

Those who challenge what is happening at Power headquarters are labelled as "old Port supporters" who are mired in outdated SANFL traditions and do not understand the AFL system.

This is dangerous ground. No business - in particular a vulnerable business - offends its core customer base, that of the "old Port Magpies".

And to now push the line that the AFL - unlike the SANFL - does not allow a team to always chase a finals berth is a cop-out. A big cop-out. One that would irk the Port traditionalists - but they don't count, apparently.

Like the game's oldest club, Melbourne, South Australia's oldest football club, Port Adelaide, is a mess.

Answer to the initial question: move them to the Gold Coast. If the AFL did not insist there be AFL football in Adelaide every weekend, Gold Coast Power would be a reality today.

They could then be sponsored by Dreamworld, which would be appropriate as someone needs to tell them they are dreaming if they think they should have been near the top of the table this year, and then they could have a ride named after them, they could call it the Power ride, the ride would go three quarters of the way then just stop (shades of the Brisbane and Carlton matches)

Unbelievable.

Where has the Magpies 'club' gone then? Do you not still go and watch the Magpies? Do they still wear black & white?

Rucci has issues with the Port Adelaide FC.

As a media man he gets the irrits that we are (by his standards) not media friendly. He claims we make it difficult to contact players for interviews, and when we offer players up it is regularly the same player/s.He also has to deal with the fact that at this point in time we have no media liason officer (Hitaf Rasheed left about 6 weeks ago and we have yet to appoint one).

His argument in that article could be used for numerous other clubs too.

If you do read this Rucc, get over it,and perhaps start giving some print space to teams who are finals bound, like the Roos.We all know they get nowhere near enough attention.....

Mark Williams sounds like he is trying to do (almost) everything and be everything in the club. Mark Thompson also tried this in 2006 and the results, or lack of them speak for themselves. After our review at the end of 2006 Bomber relinquished some of the roles he had acquired in addition to the vital role of coach and again, the results speak for themselves.

Your coach should be too busy to be the media liaison officer at the football club. Your coach should be too busy to be the 'face' of Port Adelaide. If Williams, who is no longer coaching winning sides and needs to be 'controlled', perhaps it's time for Choco to go.

regards,

REB

Think the same was happening at the western bulldogs last year with Rodney Eade. This year they have apparently told him his primary focus is coaching and the club will handle many of those other issues. Seems to have worked for them also.

Surely at your own club you wouldn't have to pay to hold your own functions? yes
Surely you'd get more than 25% of the profit from your own function? no
Thats because Port Magpies don't own that club, fullstop.
