Yes they have succeeded - this was the last response that I received from ABC2:
"I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy that ABC2 will not screen the 2008
state- and territory-based football competitions, and are additionally
dissatisfied with the ABC's response to your original email. You are
correct in observing that currently ABC2 closes most nights at around
the time that the football replays were broadcast. I appreciate that
this must add to your frustration. The closing time and the decision to
terminate the football replays are actually two unrelated issues. At the
present time the ABC's broadcast division does not have the resources to
manage two 24hr (or near 24hr) channels. ABC2 does intend to extend its
broadcast hours over the course of the year. With regards to the state-
and territory-based football competitions, ABC2 has advised that even if
resources were available to broadcast for longer hours, this material
would not be shown. This is based on the decision, as stated in the
recent response on the webpage, to only broadcast material that has a
nationwide audience.
I can empathise with the disappointment that you and others are feeling,
and I appreciate that you may remain unsatisfied with this response.
However that is the decision that has been made by ABC2. Please be
assured that your comments have been brought to the attention of the
relevant ABC staff.
Yours sincerely
Dave Graves

So there you go they are not interested in the sporting community
I am now trying to see if Foxtel will take it on - they seem to be happy to put on the NSWRL and QLD Rugby League during the week.

Aurora Channel shows the NSWAFL show every week, why can't they put something on from the WAFL and VFL, even if it's just a highlights package from their televised games.

1. Like there are any other sort of crowds than local ones. Would hardly change the argument if it were proved that 20% of attendees turned up from more than 50km away.doggies4eva wrote:While I am disappointed with this I can understand the ABC's attitude.
How can you nationally broadcast a sport that has local crowds of around 3,000...
They broadcast it when it had teams from the Adelaide metro area only. To be realistic, they were always going to treat VFL, WAFL and SANFL as a job lot: if SANFL had added an NT team, it's not like it would have been singled out for special treatment.doggies4eva wrote:...and has teams from the Adelaide metropolitan area only? If the SANFL hadn't knocked back the NT's submission it at least could be argued that this is a regional comp. The SANFL is bringing this on itself.

How come we can get this, but not the Aussie Rules.

It's elementary, my dear Watson.
The ABC is run from Sydney. "National" means NSW [and southern Qld]. That way they don't have to look fair afield for something to put on.
