Neville "Chicken" Hayes - the King of the Bunny Chop. I'd almost forgotten him.
[Yes Norwood had one too - Peter Brenchley from St Kilda.]

Tell me more about the Bunny Chop. I never saw Brenchley play and only saw the end of Hayes' career, so they'd obviously eradicated the problem by then.

A traditional country way of killing a rabbit was to hit it on the back of the neck just below the base of the skull with the hard edge of the palm of your hand - a karate technique used even before karate was known by name in this country. Both of those players used it surreptitiously when running alongside a player or spoiling a mark.

Was it a big enough issue for the game's administrators to intervene, or were Hayes and Brenchley the only two players who used the tactic? Surely it would have been a free kick for a high tackle, not to mention reportable for striking?

I think it was only one field umpire still in those days, and the attitude was that that sort of thing was "part of the game", like Neil Kerley's elbow to the face technique. Itwas also something you could do fairly discreetly with your forearm across your chest although you lost some force that way with the reduced swing. I doubt they were the only ones but they were the ones who did it regularly.
