Interested in peoples opinion on the assoc game concept. When you hear about the young lad at Mallala getting supended while doing everything possible to play while also hold down employment, it makes you wonder why some players would even bother! A lot of players at all clubs just look forward to the week off!

See the APFL have got it completely wrong, again???? Last Wednesday night at Assoc training, Harry Taylor told the emergencies for the team that they would not be playing on Saturday and would not be required to show up on Saturday at the game. As a result Brian Montgomery organises to work as he would every Saturday up until 1pm. The coach then rang him late Friday night to tell Brian he is now needed as Tom Smith pulled out, to which Brian couldnt commit as he had already committed to working for the day (given he was told this was ok) so the APFL slaps him with a one-week suspension. Absolute load of sh#t, considering he went to every training unlike 70% of the other squad members and was told he was not required. All due respects to Buschy, there hasnt been too many smart decisions coming from your way for several years.

Spot on there Swamp. Mark Pym was slapped with a one week suspension for not playing even though he had booked his holidays 6 months in advance. Considering Pymy has given more than his fair share of service to the Association over the years (including captaining the side) you would think they would overlook it. Bullsh*t!!!!

Unbelievable! That just takes the cake. So now we have had a young up & coming player been shafted as well as a player who has always made himself available for the league & supported the concept fully. The people running this league astound me! Surely the clubs of these respective players will challenge these decisions???

That is very disappointing to read this . They sound like they got it wrong again.

Yeah I have heard that one, highly probable as well as Sam McArdle's return before the seasons out. Both will be handy. Im surprised its taken this long, considering they're sitting 4th. I guess when you've got money to waste, then why not. Last years investments payed dividends, thats for sure.

Not too sure if i would recruit Byron. I think trouble may follow him. Although he is definately a talent & would raise a clubs profile. I'm sure a lot of players would be keen to play with & against someone of that calibre. Sam McArdle back in a tigers jumper is the big bonus i would think for the tiges. A talented local boy who is a key position player with plenty of aggression. Sometimes a little too hotheaded perhaps.....

I can't see Pickett lineing up for the Tiges. If he does play though, I'm sure a few of the clubs North Melbourne supporters will have a crack at humping his leg. But like Wangas last year, it would be great for the Club's profile if he ran out for a game or two.

Sam would be a huge pick up and id say be more value than Byron. Its funny how country footy in a way brings players back to an even playing field (to an extent) i havent worded that very well) but i mean hear-say would suggest that a superstar like Che and byron would dominate country footy comps, however it is a completely different style and type of footy and i believe it really levels out certain welll-drilled abilities, which is great.
I have a theory that a country team is better off recruiting gun standout country footballers whom have played country footy and play well for several years over a player whom has played at league level all his life (however nobody is going to knock back the likes of Quino and Che). Footy at higher levels is heavily drilled which makes it predictable for teammates and hence easier to get a kick. ie intricate game plans, knowing where to run and expecting the ball to be given every time. I realise that if guys like byron want to play at your club your not going to knock him back, cos as we have seen with Che, he hasnt set the world on fire with his footy, but he has brought a lot of interest and excitement to United FC. I guess its a similar story at Virginia with Ricky O i mean most people would expect him to be dominating kick 5-6 goals per game, but reality is your never going to get that every week.
It is for these reasons that i dont agree with country clubs actively recruiting and paying big big dollars for high profile players. As a team striving for on field success, i'd sooner recruit 3 quality country footballers (for the same $$$) whom you will get better footy out of. As for blokes like Che and Byron theyre a bonus as realistically they have nothing to prove, (have a look at thier achievements, incredible) and are just looking to enjoy thier footy, which is the reason they wont tear the game apart every week, the fact is if they can take home the equivilent of a wage for doing this every week its a pretty handy bonus. How many of these players is too many??

I think having high profile ex-AFL footballers can only be a good thing for your club. They generate alot of interest and young players love seeing them and talking/training with them. As far as payment goes, I'm pretty sure Che isn't earning as much as you think he is. He certainly couldn't live off his weekly football wage. I reckon you're right when it comes to busting your gut week in and week out though. They don't really have much left to prove, but anyone who's played AFL is a fierce competitor and they certainly wouldn't like losing.

As far as lifelong Country footballers who are big guns, they would be commanding big coin (as much if not more than an ex SANFL/AFL player. I know Matty Oliver was on big $$$, but he certainly busted his gut each week and earned it.

I'd have to agree MC, absolute joke. It would seem the zone squad was picked prior to the carnival on Saturday which is shocking, considering everyone that played on Saturday would have been busting thier balls to make the squad, which supposedly is meant to be "a team of the carnival". Is anything done with common sense anymore?

There is a fair difference between Che and Byron. Che was past it well before he came to the APFL.
