Early results are as epected with the Czech Republic defeating hosts Switzerland 1-0 and Portugal easily overcoming Turkey 2-0.

Because I'm a retarded pissed minder I managed to miss the first game, but watched the mighty Portuguese totally dominate and outplay the Turks. Portugal had the vast majority of the play and but for the Turkish woodwork could have won 3 or 4 nil. Ronnie was resonably well checked (flattened most times he went near the ball) but had a couple of decent pings at the target. I think it was Nani nearly had his leg broken by an airborn lunging tackle from one of the Turks before the second goal sealed the points for Portugal.

Get in. I really want to see Ronnie lift the trophy to cap a stellar season and only a day after he pledged his future to REAL MADRID - Fergie must be having nightmares!!!!

Anyhow good wrap there DA, the Swiss have more holes then the cheese they make, and the Portuguese
will be going deep, until they meet either France or Germany and get booted out...

I need to preserve my strength for the Tuesday morning (our time) game between the Divers and the Oranje...

The German goal was offside IMO. When Ballack flicked that ball on, Klose was just offside. Play on though, Klose's in my dream team, so I'll gladly take that assist. Poland had a couple of decent chances late in the first half, but with the team Alemania is fielding, you'd expect them to go on with it and take 3 points.

The Croats got up in the early game 1-0 over co-hosts Austria, who for the 30mins I watched in the first half, looked like a complete rabble. Perhaps Croatia should have won by 1 or 2 more, but I didn't see the second half, so maybe they were reduced to the Austrian level.

Farcical defending by the poles and and equally farcical attempt on goal by Klose led to Podolski's second for the Krauts, who ended up winning 2-0. Hopefully Klose get's another assist for my dream team points.

France are RUBBISH!!!!! What a crappy, boring, uneventful game. I think I had twice as many beers as I would have if it wasn't such a shocking game to watch. Stupid frogs.

What a cracking result for SJABC's dutchies. Soooooo good to see the diving Iti's go down. Coupled with the frogs sharing the points with Romania, The Netherlands are best placed to go through, which is frigging awesome.

I take back what I said about Spain - they were awesome in beating the Ruskies 4-1. Bloody wish I'd put Villa in my team, thought about it but blew my bedget on defenders - idiot!!! With that hattrick, he'll be well outside Spurs price range now too.

Fatgreatbigarse scored the other for Spain, while Guus had nothing. Obviously the Russians don't understand Dutch or English.

Spain usually start off firing before collapsing come the KO rounds so don't get too excited! By all reports Russia were terrible though... I bet that makes it hurt even more for the English!!!

Portugal 3 - Czech Republic 1

Ronnie did it all in a cracking game of football which I was fortunate enough to watch in the Ribeira district in Porto. The Portuguese know how to have a party when the footy is on, that's for sure.

Portugal dominated early and scored in the 7th minute, but the Czech's took over after that and equalised not long after. Both sides had their chances prior to the half, but IMO the Czechs had a slight upper hand.

In the second half, Portugal totally dominated, but the Czechs again had 3 or 4 genuinely good attempts on goal either go just wide or were saved.

Ronnie was clearly man of the match, with Deco a close second. Good to see Quaresma score the third thanks to Ronaldo's unselfishness.

Portugal are the first team through, although their defence looks quite patchy and will definitely struggle against the Dutchies and Germans unless they can sort it out at the back. Gotta say though, Pepe will add some zero's to his weekly pay cheque after this tourny - he looks bloody handy.

Co-hosts Switserland are the first side out of the comp after a late goal saw them go down 2-1. Can't see Austria going through, hosting didn't really play an advantage, but niether host was particularly highly rated going in.

The atmosphere would have been incredible in Porto! I look forward to the highlights tonight (or today if it's quiet), Ronaldo with the goal which put Portgual in front and then setting up the sealer for Quaresma, crucial win which will see them through to the next round.

For gawds sake, next time you watch Portugal DA, make sure you have tissues handy to wipe up the dribble from looking
at Ronaldo

As it sits

GROUP A. (games played, goal difference & points)
Portugal.............2.................4.................6
Czech Republic....2.................-1................3
Turkey...............2.................-1................3
Switzerland.........2.................-2................0

Portugal are through, the Czechs & Turkey game....winner takes it all !! Not sure what happens if it's a draw as goal
difference is the same ? Extra time, then penalties perhaps.....

I saw the same question posted on another site, it's quite bizarre... but the fact that they play in the last game makes things easier.

If two teams meeting in one of the last group matches have the same number of points, the same goal difference and the same number of goals, and if this match stands at a draw at the end of normal time, then the ranking of these two teams will be determined by kicks from the penalty spot, provided no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches.

So, in other words, because they actually play each other in the final group game, they can have penalties. Otherwise, it would have gone to this obscure rule:

(f) Coefficient of points from the last two qualifying competitions for the final rounds of the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008 (points gained and divided by the number of matches played).

Here's the scenes from Porto just after the match:

(Please take note of who happens to be on the big screen!!!)

The crowd went bananas when Quaresma scored, being a local Porto boy. They love him!
