Mitchell also a developing centre half-forward who played okay in the Under 16s last year. Footy still has very strong designs on him if he goes okay at the 18s this year.

He's coming along nicely. However, let's not get carried away. He's been reasonably good for a while, but good form for a few weeks is far different from the year in year out consistency the selectors can and have in the past demanded to get into the side. I'd like to see him perform in finals or have another ripping season before I pushed out a proven player to make room for him.

No relevance? You've still got to hit the runs. Shot selection and shot execution are valuable skills in any form of the game. Hitting the ball to the boundary is still worth 4 runs in test cricket.

There was a time not so long ago that 4 runs an over was a good one day clip. Now it's pretty normal in test cricket. And is it a co-incidence that many of the best 20/20 cricketers are the best one day cricketers and test cricketers?

Averaging 50 in any form of cricket is good. The fact that he did so when expected to score more than a run a ball makes it more difficult. His current form shows he's good enough to be an igood nternational batsman. I'd like to see him tested for longer and in different conditions before passing judgement though.

Rubbish. Rules in 50 over cricket and even more so in 20/20 are geared to ensure runs are scored and scored quickly. A bowler has just 4 overs in 20/20 and can't really work in a bowling partnership to tie down and put pressure on batsmen. Pitches are mostly batting wickets giving bowlers very little if any assistance. Free hit for no balls, fielding restrictions, 10 wickets to last a side 20 overs. Seriously you cannot ever suggest runs in 20/20 have any relevance to a players ability to bat for long periods and build an innings. Sure run rates are increasing in Test cricket but that is because we see Australia so much. They have brilliant players like Hayden, Ponting, Hussey etc. who have superb techniques combined with the proven ability to bat for long periods in difficult conditions and against quality bowling. You don't see 20/20 games being played on a 5th day Test match wicket.

This is not a dig at Marsh as i believe he has a lot of potential but his 20/20 sucess is not relevant to his credentials for a Test berth.

I think a lot of Australia's success of the last decade has been because players like Gilchrist and Symonds have the ability to score runs quickly at Test level.

Symonds remains and if Marsh's form continues I think it would be worth putting him in to the side in the middle order and with time, he could then become an opener.

I'm not nominating anyone he should replace, the timing of his Test selection may come naturally with injury/form issues.
