Advertising boards on fences

Postby spell_check » Fri May 30, 2008 9:20 pm

Did they appear at all grounds at once, with the arrival of colour TV? Or were they there at some grounds before 1975? And I wonder how many companies have had a sign (not the same design though) since? West End I'd imagine would be one.

I remember "Smith's Crisps" at Woodville in the very early 70's, followed by "Rothmans King Size". A classic not long after was "Lloyds Home Modernization". These were all well before colour television.

"Big Ben Pies" is the one I recall, decked out in 1970s Mission Brown and Orange!

Fast forward to today and I wonder how long it will be before Football Park moves to the digital signage used in the EPL?

Spelly, there is footage of the 1972 GF on Youtube, with no advertising boards visible there. Footage of the first game played at Football Park in 1974 also shows no boards there. 1975 GF footage does show advertising, suggesting your theory may well be correct.

watching the dvd on the glenelg v central match in 1975 (49.23 to 11.13) yep that game :D , there is advertising all around the outer side fence, don't think they were behind the goals though (although the floggers would have covered them up anyway :D :D )
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Didn't know the end to enders were allowed on the ground back then or were even around....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Recall being on the pickets for the '75GF and some redcoat berating me for hanging something over the fence which was obscuring advertising.

Was thinking this on Saturday while having a look at the faded daggy signage at Lathlain which Mr Leys is doing something about.

Definitely mid-70s..
