ROCKY
A dumba55 Italian from Philedelphia sure can take a smack in the head and it shows with some trully remarkable slurred diction. He picks up the only girl who can understand him, a retarded chick who wears a tea cosy on her head and works in a pet shop after her brother and Rocky's mate Paulie gives him the nod. Smooth talking fighting machine Apollo Creed wants to promote the USA as the land of opportunity and decides to dance around the ring with the local southpaw, the Italian Stallion himself. Rocky is so dumb that instead of cooking the beef he hits it and turns down a lucrative career working with the local mob to fight a guy who is actually good enough to hit him back. He is aided in his cause though by a venerable Jewish trainer Mickey who is tougher than anyone in the entire Rocky series. Rocky is a total numbnuts who suddenly grows wings when the local Philly kids chase him throught the streets and up the stairs. The rousing soundtrack of Bill Conti lets you know that he's ready. Flash harry Creed thinks that its an easy day out but he's having trouble with the unconvential southpaw who absorbs more punishment than a St Kilda fan. At the end of 15 titanic rounds the heavyweight title is awarded to Creed on a TKO. There aint gonna be no rematch - Don't want one is the final goodbye.
ROCKY II
The post bout ambulance ride is all that is needed for Creed to change his mind. When they are wheeled into the hospital Creed is ready to go again much to Rocky's amazement. After Rocky recovers he is fighting out of his weight division as he deals with real estate agents, advertising low lifes and personell officers and lo and behold, he has gotten even dumber if that's possible. He spends up big even though he can no longer see out of one eye, an infirmament that is miracoulously overcome in no less than four more Rocky sequels. Creed meanwhile, is copping hatemail because he invented the Brazillian and also because the brothers aren't happy that he couldn't knock out a white guy. On the home front Rocky scores a goal and a Bambino is on the way. Rocky ends up working in the meatworks to pay the bills while Creed tries to shame him back into the ring for a rematch. Rocky cops more humilation at Mickey's boxing gym but eventually Mickey teams up with the Italian Stallion for the rematch. Rocky is training like a dog though because Adrian is not happy and Paulie goes round to sledge her and she hits the deck after moving a tub of birdseed. Adrian slips into a coma and Rocky's son is born but training is on hold even though Mickey is trying to shake up the big lug. Adrian recovers and gives Balboa the green light and once again Conti heralds the fact that the rock is back! The second duel is as titanic as the first but this time in the final round both fighters hit the deck. With the count reaching its last seconds, it is Rocky who staggers to his feet. Balboa is the champion. Rocky Balboa has shocked the world! YO ADRIAN WE DID IT!
ROCKY III
All of a sudden Rocky is one smooth muvvafugger. He is doing American Express ads with ease and even gets a gig on the Muppett Show. A far cry from when he used to smeel manly. Rocky has ten title defenses but in the meantime, harda55 Clubber Lang is destroying everyone left right and centre. Lang is a hungry fighter who screams out I WANT BALBOA. He clearly has the eye of the Tiger. Rocky gets into the ring with Thunderlips the wrestler in a bout that is more realistic than anything you'd see in WWWhatever. Clubber wants a piece of the rock though and when Rocky gets a statue made up of him he appears on the scene and puts the hard word on a suddenly fanciable Adrian. Rocky says any time but Mickey isn't having any of it. As usual Rocky gets his way and Mickey and Rocky team up to take on the might of Clubber Lang. Before the bout Mickey has a heart attack and Rocky is not focussed and he gets knocked out by Clubber. Rocky is at a low ebb as Mickey passes away but suddenly Apollo Creed makes a surprise entrance and two become friends as Creed trains up Rocky for another shot at the title against Creed. As usual though, Rocky needs a kick start from Adrian before Bill Contis driving score fires up again. Pauly steals the scene with a classic series of whinges at Creeds old gym in California. What is your prediction from the fight? Prediction? Yes Prediction. PAIN. But by the end of the movie it is Clubber Lang who is in pain as a trimmed down Rocky is far too mobile for the bigger champion. Rocky cleans up Clubber to regain the title. The series should have ended here.
ROCKY IV
In this outdated as soon as it was released movie, this USA all the way tuggfest opens with Rocky and Apollo firm friends. A big Russian unit Drago is welcomed to the USA with the red hot Bridgette Nielson on his massive arm. Scientifically tested and proven by the USSR (A bit like Chernobyl Power Plant), Drago is the ultimate fighter. Creed is not impressed and being the overgrown schoolboy that he is, decides to take Drago to school. Creed puts on a fantastic show but he has a slight set back as he gets killed by the Russian in the ring. THIS TIME IT'S PERSONAL. Rocky decides to hit the snow and chuck on a 80's Soundtrack as he prepares for the big fight against Drago to be held in the Soviet Union. When he gets to the ring in this one Rocky is about as popular as a spew in a boot...must be the stars and stripes boxer shorts. However, Rocky eventually beats Drago and for some reason the Russians start cheering for Rocky. No, I didn't get it either.
ROCKY V
The focus of this Rocky is more about his son. A brain damaged Rocky loses all his dough due to a dodgy accountant and ends up back in the old turf in Philly. It's a bit of a culture shock for his boy who has been brought up in a privelleged environment so far. As Rocky's son Robert comes of age in a tough neigbourhood, dad's attention has been diverted to a new challenger for the heavyweight title who is being trained by Rocky. Rocky's protege Tommy 'Machine' Gunn is tough and talented and quickly rises through the ranks thanks to Rocky's guidance. Rocky Jnr though needs his guidance more and he loses first a fight and then his jacket after being cornered by bullies. This time when the march music starts up Tommy Gunn and Rocky Jnr eventually learn how to fight. Rocky misses his son's rise to manhood and just when it appears that Rocky is once again going to be involved in a big fight, a shifty agent George Washington Duke snaffles Tommy Gunn. Tommy Gunn wins the title against a stooge but a Rocky he'll never be. So he decides to 'Duke' it out with the Rock in the street after Paulie cops one from the young champ. Early on Tommy is firing but Balboa is solid as a rock and eventually pounds Tommy in the street. Once again Rocky is the champion. A much underrated chapter of the Rocky saga.
ROCKY VI (Rocky Balboa)
Cement sets faster than this one gets going. Adrian is dead, or at least dead sick of playing Adrian and the Rock is no less than sixty years of age. Most of the first half of this film is devoted to a punchy fighter's memories (not sure any old fighter would remember so much) and a nostalgia tour of Mickey's gym, the ice skating rink and Adrian's grave. It's all go I can tell you. In the meantime the current champion Mason 'Line' Dixon is being shown in a computer generated match up with Balboa and isn't thrilled about the result. All of this is sheer torture for Robert who is now a fully fledged yuppie who can't emerge out of Rocky's shadow is downright ashamed of him. The news that Rocky intends to fight Dixon in a charity match in Vegas is not exactly an MP3 to his ears. Rocky delivers his usual eloquence to his son before fighting Dixon in Vegas. Early on Dixon is all over him but the champ gets hurt and this allows Rocky to hold his own. As in the first Rocky, Rocky loses in a split decision but by then he doesn't care as he is done. He ends up at Adrian's grave yet again (sigh) and once again its YO ADRIAN WE DID IT. Rocky then waves and heads off into the distance.
There you go boys, just saved you some dosh. Cheers.
regards,
