Geoff Motley - Hall of Famer.

Postby Leaping Lindner » Thu May 08, 2008 10:16 pm

Geoff Motley has made the Australian Football of Fame.
A bit before my time but no doubt a worthy inclusion.

Sham, how Noel Teasdale gets in ahead of Peter Carey has me stuffed....

Even if you say the SANFL was only half as good as the old VFL   , Supe has played more games, won 1.5 more premierships still has more All Australian Guernseys, and has kicked more goals

Supe has also maintained an involvement with Glenelg post his retirement (i.e. has contributed off the field)

Joke absolute joke....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Well done, Mots!

Big game player saved his best for when it mattered.

None better than the '57 GF win against Norwood when he kicked seven goals...

Teaser should be in, he was a great player. No problem there, but Carey should also be in, I agree. Maybe next year.

The amazing thing there is he started in the centre and couldn't get a kick so they threw him out onto the flank, and he booted them all in the 2nd half.

Mots was a great player. From the time I began to watch footy he was a CHB and won the Magarey Medal in 1964. The joke about Mots was of his bandy legs. They joked if they could straighten his legs they'd have a 6'6" ruckman rather than a 5'10" CHB.

Also the only Port Adelaide skipper I can recall who refused to wear No.1, opting for his famous No.17 jumper instead.

A little known fact about Motley is he was named captain-coach of Glenelg in 1962 but Port wouldn't clear him, so he returned to the Magpies.

A quote from the 1965 Record Year Book:

In most ways he is an integral part of the Port method, and in other ways he isn't. For instance he dropkicks so consistently and so effectively that is is almost a defiance of the Fos Williams grab-and-punt doctrine.

I agree. Teaser played a lot of State footy for Victoria in an era containing Nicholls and Farmer. He was the master at dropping back into the goalsquare or a kick behind the play to take a relieving mark.

Is there a chance that Super could go straight in as a legend?

He's got the record to justify it.

No chance at all. The only other SANFL only player that has even a remote chance of ever being elevated to a legend is Ken Farmer.

Farmer was inducted in 1998, two years after the inaugural intake.

Hall of Fame nomination was a given for Farmer.

LL was talking about elevating people to the Legends status. From what I have read and learned about Ken Farmer, I'd have to agree he must be on the short list to legendary status. There's only one FF I place ahead of Farmer and that's Peter Hudson. 100 goals 11 seasons in a row by Farmer is astounding.

Coleman must have been great, but to compare his achievements with those of Hudson and Farmer is pure folly so far as I'm concerned.
