Essendon Coach

Talk on the national game

Knights got the job on the catch cry of not major list changes whereas Hardwick said that they needed to be active in both the trade period and do lots of homework on the draft selections available to them.

now when a club appoints a coach on the proviso that no major restructure is required, then 7 games in two serviceable players over the last few seasons are told that they are no longer required, not only that he has let the players down by being dishonest upfront but has blatantly given false hope to everyone involved with the club.

I can't believe Kevin Sheedy has escaped criticism for the insipid list that he has left Matthew Knights to work with. Essendon were always going to struggle this year, no matter who was coaching. They just don't have the cattle, and things would be a little different had Sheedy spent a little more time on list management and a little less time on self-promotion over the past 4-5 years.

Bit harsh.Sheedy has twice in his coaching career turned a young list into a premiership chance in a matter of a couple of years, you might find he didnt have the opportunity to develop this team,it does take time when you turn over lots of players.

The coach is not the only bloke to recruit players there is a whole division of the club dedicated to giving the coach the information he requires on potential draftees, not his fault if they get it wrong.Robert Shaw is there, isnt he? Everything he touches turns to shite.

I agree, Sheed's list development was very poor over the past few years, however, the appointment of Knights was also poor

Knights convinced the Board that he had a list to play finals in 2008 and win a flag within 3 years, Hardwick's list assessment was that the list needed to be rebuilt, the Board went with Knights, now they have to live with that decision

This was an interesting article that appeared in The Age last week. Very heavy on semantics.

Thanks for the link, Mc.

What it says to me is that both he and Hardwick told the Board of Essendon similar things, with Hardwick focussing on the negative and Knights on the positive. No wonder he got the job - who'd appoint the negative sounding bloke?

I'm still not convinced...................actually, despite the past couple of weeks I'm still convinced he is NOT the right person for the job, the wins have been against less than convincing opposition, his game plan reminds me a bit of Jarmans, very one dimensional, looks good when it works, looks fu(#ing woeful when it doesn't.

Credit where it's due to the Bombers - they looked stuffed a while back. Quel surprise - there's a bit more defensive action.

I'm still not sure who their gun stars of the future will be, given their great-white-hope key forward and highest draft pick of the past few years (Gumbleton) is being derailed by injury.
