Upping the tax on alcohol!!

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

As for putting your assetts (sic) in a tax-free environment, I'd expect nothing less of you, Psyber, but it's a bit rich (pardon the pun) of you to complain about broken promises when you're not contributing your fair share.

I also think you're descending into the type of generalisation without foundation that you deplore in others.

As for 'hidden people' influencing Rudd, I'd say he has well and truly put that to rest so far.

Yes, because if he were influenced by someone he may have actually done something by now!

Rudd will be vilified by the moaning malcontents on here whatever he does at budget time.

I, for one, am finally glad we've got someone in power who will spend my money responsibly. For years now I've seen my tax dollars piss*d up a tree by John Howard in an attempt to keep Janette in the Lodge.

In the light of the credit squeeze and slowing economies around the word some fiscal responsibilty is a welcome change after eleven years of spending patterns that would make a drunker sailor blush.

I'm guessing you're proud of this?

Let's hope you never need a public hospital in an emergency.

Perfectly legal old boy! I didn't do it while I thought the tax regime was likely to remain reasonable, but when the situation becomes unpredictable you take steps - that's why all manufacturing is slowly moving offshore too.

I have had private health insurance all my life, including as a kid when my father was employed in SA Railways. We never believed in sponging off the taxpayer if we could afford not to. If I land in a public hospital I'll get priority because they can put me in as private and make money on me to compensate for state underfunding, and I'm generous enough to contribute to the community good in that way! I just want to choose how not be told how!

If it's this little old tax-free environment then you might want to think about shifting it...sooner rather than later

Nope, a perfectly legal tax free environment within Australia under our Superannuation and Trust laws, unless they are changed retrospectively, in which case I have only lost the setting up fees as I already had a Pty Ltd company lying around doing nothing at the moment. I don't take on anything that can't be defended. 8)

Interesting my mate went down to the pub today and they slugged him 8.50 for a bottle of McKenna burbourn and cola.Up from 6.50 last week and the pub said it was the tax. So much for the 30c-50c per drink. Also said a carton of RTD's will now go up another $25-$30 a carton.......

200 cent rise per bottle. How many "standard drinks" in a bottle?
Say 45% alcohol compared with wine at 15% or less - one bottle of wine is usually 6 standard drinks, so Bourbon is probably 18 or more per bottle.
So, 200 /18 = 11.11 cents per standard drink - or less if the wine average is less - whites are nearer 12% usually.

I wonder how much my stock of wines, Ports, and good Scotches has gone up in auction value by? 8)

It was bourbon and cola Psyber. It would be diluted alcohol, well below the rates you quote.

Topsy, I like to stir those who bleat about poverty and deprived backgrounds, and complain about the "rich" being so, as I came from an equally impoverished background, but just chose to use what I could earn and not to stay there and complain! My sister became the family's first millionaire after leaving Woodville High aged 16. Both parents left school at 14.

The terms "class war" and "disadvantage" are largely excuses for those who don't try to help themselves or make bad choices, and are tools for divisive politics.
[I accept that some people do suffer genuine tragedies unrelated to their choices and do deserve help.]

Ahh... that explains the price. Please use the percentage on the label to re-run my calculation - it would be interesting to see what it worked out to per "standard drink".
