A thing I found that was interesting in that is the first quarter performances of both Central and Eagles, compared to the other three quarters.

funny you mention that. i reckon over the last 7 or 8 years there have been heaps of times where the eagles did what they did against sturt at thebarton. even against lesser sides. i recall norwood jumping them at woodville in 06 and earlier that year at adelaide.

That's what we have been renowned for. Sturt in 2000 at Unley, Norwood at Norwood in 2003, South at Woodville in that year, North at Prospect in that year are some I can think of.

Spelly, I'm sure you've covered this before, but I was looking at the details of a game between Port and Norwood back in the 1930s where the 1/4 time score was PA 12-3, N 7-3.

This got me wondering what the highest 1/4 time score from any team is, and also the highest aggregate by 2 teams at 1/4 time.

And what is the highest amount from any team in any quarter of football?

12.6 (78) on three occasions: North vs South in Rd 7 1972, Glenelg vs Central in Rd 17 1975 and Glenelg vs Woodville in Rd 6 1977
Highest aggregate up to quarter time is that match in 1936.
15.7 (97) by West vs Torrens in Round 8 1982 is the record by a team in any quarter.

Norwood at Oval Ave 04. Also plenty of times where we have started of slow and lost but been competeive for the last three quarters. Ie 3 or 4 times against West in 03, v North r1 06.

This discussion makes me think of another question:

Which quarter has the highest correlation with the result of the game?

i.e. Is the winner of a game most likely to win the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter? People talk about the 3rd quarter being the "premiership quarter", but how often do the 3rd quarter winners really go on to win the games?

(Looking at the quarter by quarter totals, there might well be some evidence to support that theory!)

Re: quarters

It's actually the last quarter. Out of the 7951 matches that have not had a draw up to the end of last year, these are the number of winning quarters for those teams who won the match:
1st: 5,246
2nd: 5,305
3rd: 5,468
4th: 5,604
Total: 21,623

So, using that total, we are able to determine the average number of quarter won by the team who won the match.
21,623/7951= 2.72 quarters won
