One way that she could copyright the idea (was recommended to a friend of mine as a way of proving ownership of a document)...write the idea down in as much detail as possible...seal in an envelope and sign across the flap to show it hasn't been opened since...then post it to herself using your equivelent of our recorded delivery so there is a record of the date etc...DO NOT reopen it...it's one way to prove she thought of the idea first as it has been dated by the post office.

Noooooo! That simple?

Anyway, would be very interesting to see what sort of tv show a hairdresser comes up with.....

I have a few ideas myself, most of them involve visiting pubs ;)

Copyright is yours as soon as you write it down - evidence such as a system date on a word file is enough. That's not really the issue anyway ..... does she have enough money to spend on lawyers to fight for her IP rights if the TV network just took her idea and ran with it? If not then forget about it because they would only have to tweak the idea slightly and say it's theirs and she'd be stuffed.

Unless she is able to exploit the idea commercially herself (ie, do her own TV series), I suspect her best hope is to go to them with a witness and ask for a spotter's fee maybe?

Alternatively, if she thinks she has talent as a writer she could write herself a script and try to sell it for royalties

I think she'll find there's more to the TV business than dreaming up ideas maybe if she has a passion there she could go to media college?

Hope this doesn't sound too harsh bayman - it's meant to be constructive...

First up - does she have any runs on the board? If not, she's already behind the eight-ball. Because she'd find it extremely hard to get a meeting with anyone otherwise. (Unless, of course, she knows someone who knows someone who knows somone.) Caution: there are more time-wasters in film and television than any other industry.

SPAA, the annual producers conference held every year on the Gold Coast, holds pitching sessions where anyone can meet with network programmers. But it'll cost you $1500 just to get in the door.

The ABC and SBS will occasionally put the word out that they're looking for new shows. A three-page pitch document is the bare minimum requirement. But its best to shoot a pilot (5 minutes or show) to go along with it. But they don't come cheap. If you were skimping, it's still gonna cost you a couple grand. And even then it would be crap unless you can call in favours from cast and crew. A-LOT of favours!

Even if the moon and the stars and God knows what else are all aligned, chances are it will take years to get her project up and running. Years. And in that time she will be out-of-pocket. Considerably. Because while she develops it, she won't get paid a cent. So it has to be a labour of love.

Lastly, I guarantee that her idea is already 'out there'. People pitch the same idea/concept/show all the time. It's very common to have competing projects that are almost identical...

Interesting thread Bayman. Nice post MagpiesPower.
Isn't there a job where all people do is sit around and brainstorm ideas? Sounds as though your hairdresser friend needs that job.
I imagine that people who work in such a job just recieve a wage and incentives. But just what sort of royalties would be associated with coming up with even the best idea for a TV show ever? I imagine the more input and time spent by an individual developing a certain idea would reflect how much they earned from the fruition of that idea.
How much does an author earn when somebody makes a movie based on their book?
Are there such people that are famous for thinking up ideas for TV shows and get paid mega-dollars just for collaborating, or at the bare minimum, suggesting an idea and then walking away?

I'd say NO :D

Like any other professional I bet there's no free meal ticket and you actually have to some WORK  to make any money out of your idea. I think Bayman's hairdresser doesn't realise what's involved in turning an idea into $$$$ in the Entertainment industry or how much hard work and set-backs are involved. With all due respect to her but as MP said "does she have any runs on the board" or could she even produce a 3-page outline of her TV show?

Do you think the Wiggles had their bright idea but then figured they'd just contact Sony Entertainment and leave them with it? I think you nailed it here .....
