Best SANFL GF you have been to and why?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

I guess a Glenelg supporter can probably appreciate what it means to win a premiership from Port. They tend to count for that little bit extra.

My memories of the post match celebrations of 1934 are hazy.

Well, I wasn't going to be rude and ask how many you had actually lost to them in GFs?

From memory (and I'm sure spelly will tell me), I reckon the Legs have a disastrous record in Qualis and first semis. If we got past there, we were going okay.

Can't remember us playing in too many second semis in the last 30 years. That always seemed the preserve of the Port boys.

Norwood's record:

1st semis (since Paige system introduced in 1931):

Played: 33
Won: 14
Lost: 18
Drawn: 1

2nd semis (since Paige system introduced in 1931):

Played: 18
Won: 5
Lost: 13

Qualifying finals (since Qual final introduced in 1973):

Played: 11
Won: 5
Lost: 6

Points of interest re Norwood's 1st semis are in 1933 must have been a close comp between 3rd and 4th.
In the "first" 1st semi North and Norwood drew 10-13 (73) apice.
In hte "2nd" 1st semi Norwood won by a point, Norwood 11-15(81) D North11-14(80)
Also in 1973 Norwood got to play the 1st semi at the Parade after also getting the Elimination final at the Parade. Not a bad deal for the team that came 4th, they still managed to lose the first semi to North by 5 pts (13-17 to 13-12)

Another whatif....a young kid in the twos was burning that year in the last few games of the minor round....the coach wanted to play him but his old man said no he's not ready yet.....

Hmm what if JAck got his way instead of Harry? Could we have made the GF (only to lose it against a one of the best Port teams I've ever seen...) No way would we have won as Port were teh best side by far that year.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Really?? Sticks was just 17 wasn't he when he debuted in 81? A whole six months earlier for the debut, especially in a final, would surely have been a bit much to ask wouldn't it???

I know some Norwood people thought McIntosh should have gone up late in 81, for the experience, but they opted to leave him in the Under 17s the whole year, and then put him straight in the ones for round one in 82.

SANFL League Garnd Finals I've been to

1995 , 1996 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007

Best 2000 cuase it was the first winning one by Centrals!
2nd 2004 - well Awe inspiring - kinda like Geelong v Port Adelaide AFL last year. To see a side totally dominate the entire contest truly amazing!
3rd 1995 - It was a great pre-game atmosphere a sell out crowd of over 40,000 , sad we lost!
Worst 1996 - It was supposed to be the year!

Wished I'd been at given I was old enough to see them on TV
1984 - Norwood v Port - What a game to watch
1994 - Port Adelaide v Woodville-West Torrens - How did they do it!
1999 - Listened on the radio all afternoon - Norwood should have hung on, shame!

Cheers!

The SANFL adopted the final 5 for the first time in 1973 and needed a second oval as Football wasn't ready. They chose Norwood, long before they knew the composition of the top 5. The year before, Norwood made the finals for the 1st time since 1965, so they were no certainties to make them.

The SANFL had also designated the Elimination and 1st Semi Finals to Norwood Oval irrespective of who was playing. So it wasn't a matter of Norwood getting a "deal", it was just how it panned out.

For the record, Norwood actually finished 5th at the end of the minor round and I thought losing by a goal just before the siren to a team who had won the previous two premierships, and had 6 more wins in 1973, was a pretty good effort.

Would I be correct in saying that Norwood was given the two finals because it was in a central location like Adelaide and that Thebarton wasn't used because that's where most of the other grades finals were played?

My best was 1986. I was sitting on the fence between the coaches boxes. Last years Ressies GF was fantastic sitting with the rest of the SL and the players came over after the game :D

1971-2 = North v Port, Roosters victorious in both- had a great side.
1973 = Glenelg v North, Probably the best ever sanfl GF. Tregenza= outstanding.
1979 = Darryl Cahill kicked a goal out of his a---e in the first minute, the writing was on the wall :(
1983 = West , had a sensational side..........

I think I may posted this earlier but I'll do it again. Having never been to a SANFL GF, I can only go by the videos I've got.
1/ 1984
2/ 1973
3/ 1999
4/ 1994
5/ 1977
6/ 1983
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

the first was in 200 was not suppose to be there but went, waited 30 years for a premiership and finally got one, cried after the siren. danny hulm's speech was amazing never will forget his words.
2001:was a special one for me they played not for themselves but for the loss of danny, to lose an inspiration like him was devastating .now i have been to all of the grand finals since, all will have good and bad moments as there is in footy but the best ones are the ones we won :D =D> :supz:
