Athelstone are showing some good signs in Div2 & look like one of the top 4 sides thus far.
I know its early, i think we'll get a better idea of where their at when they play Modbury.
So far impressive.

What's the catalyst for your significant impact on the comp so far, I know you were good last year but it would seem you have gone under the radar over the summer.

Got rid of all the old dead wood which people thought would hurt us when in fact it has allowed the younger players to stand up and be confident with alot of big personalities gone from the past few years. Vassal, gunning, dutscke, lunn and hensel have come to the club and bought alot of possitives. the win against edwardstown was made all the better as garfoot and harrison didnt play and vandeveld played 2 quarters after coming back prob a bit to erly from an ankle and was nursed through.

3 back in the a's this week i believe and 5 into the b's plus the dropped a's.

Good position to be in and probably made all the sweeter with your bitter neighbours seemingly having had their bubble burst from last year

I find it ridiculous that uni holidays could be blamed for their poor start to the year.

At SMOSH we have 6 players in our A grade alone studying at Adelaide Uni. They can't have lost that many players from their first choice team. And if they have, they'd want to be pretty important players on their form from the weekend.

Having said that, fantastic result for us on the weekend in testing conditions (it was bloody hot!).

Good wins for Raggies and Modbury also. Very important game for us against SHOCS on friday. In a tight competition it's ever so improtant to get off to good start to the season, and a loss for either team leaves us behind the eight ball.

Lions on parade.

i do know that the club had 71 players unavailable throughout the club for last weekend through a combination of uni holidays, work and injuries. uni has many country kids throughout the grades who, because of the residential colleges charging per week, generally choose to go home during holidays - i do know that the a and b grade squads had quite a few out injured but whether these players would have made a seven goal difference only the return bout will show.

a side can only beat the the opposing team on the park and clearly smosh were better on the day.

the smosh c and d grade played there on saturday and said it was not good. but rest of the ground was good.

Big game on friday and sacred heart. shoc vs smosh a few old match ups likely. Kluzek vs taz. Should make for some good watching. Also the side who wins will go 2 and 1.
We're in hell right now gentlemen. Believe me. And we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time.

Its a young fit group who are full of confidence with a coach with some new and different ideas.

I think though that we all realise that it is a long way to go for the season and the early wins count for nothin if you arent playin finals @ the end of the year.
It is what it is !!!

As this appears to be exclusivley a Modbury Hawks FC thread as opposed to a SAAFL Div 2 08 thread; I want to put it out there that after speaking with some CY Cougers officials recently there is the theme of abandonment mentioned when the names Vasall, Gunning & Dutschke are bought up. These guys were apparantly super-well paid at Maitland & there is some real disappointment that they have not stuck around for a premiership defence... Everyone talks about Athelstone's unlimited cheque book but I have been 'informed' that the Hawks have one of a more than good size [$35k ha ha ha ha ha]... Cutting to the chase Gunning and Dutschke [yes check the spelling wank wank!] are now netting $4xx per Saturday and Vasall taking home $5xx... Not saying these guys aren't worth the dough but want to raise the point of desertion as felt by the Cougars... Is loyalty a thing of the past in weekend football?? I'm sure there will be a flood of responses...

Funniest thing i have ever read thank you for that. Modbury pays every A grade player per win and nothing more other than a few not paying fees etc. knowing the mentioned players you will have to go back to your sources and slap them cos obviously they need to check their sources. $35k isnt that easy to hide and it obviously would have come from a grant as we have no major major sponsors splashing cash around.

Vassal is a modbury boy through and through even when at norwood would be out watching when possible has a younger brother playing 2's. I also believe they all live together.... they said that if one went somewhere they would all go together. Modbury approached brad to come and the rest is a bonus.

so i would not listen to a Cougar Official who is making wide accusations of them chasing money(not the case) to make them look bad for leaving and not having another crack with them

I have no affiliation with Modbury but offer the a general observation to your post. Clubs like Cougars would know the risks of recruiting blokes from the city and the likelihood of them tiring of the arrangement. Cougars and country clubs like them prey on the type of player who chases the cash so don't whinge when those same shallow types chase even more cash and in this case a little closer to home. Your argument or your source at Cougars is riddled with hypocrisy when the reality is if Cougars and clubs like them are going to lie down with dogs they'll get flees and serve themselves right.
